PostPosted: Sat, 28th Jan 2012 13:05    Post subject: [OTHER] Kindle questions
I know there is a post by Chiv similar to this but I could do with a bit of advice.

My girlfriend says she may buy me a Kindle for my birthday, now I have done a bit of reading up on them, but have a few questions to anyone who has one

Is it worth her paying a lot! more for the Wi-Fi model?
Can I just d/l E-books from NG's etc and put them on it?
What, if any is the difference between a Kinldle and fire? Or is it just the same thing?
Are the upgradable with regards to storage or can they use flash drives etc?

I know a lot of these questions can be answered by Google but I would really like to know if I can read full free (or cheap) books on it.

Any other tips you can give me would be appreciated.

Cheers for the reply, I was just going to go for this one

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Kindle-Wi-Fi-6-Ink-Display/dp/B0051QVF7A/ref=amb_link_162791867_2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-1&pf_rd_r=0AJHC6FX6W5EDHAGB73W&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=278168587&pf_rd_i=468294

All I want is to be able to read books on it, that sit. Anything else is a bonus

I meant 3g not Wi-fi in my original post.

Thanks for the replies, so I assume the mobi files are not encrypted in any way? ie: to work on one device only?

Not sure about books you bought from Amazon. If you make your own mobi file with Calibre, you can use it on any device you want. I think books that have been bought from Amazon have to be copied over with that specific account active on the Kindle, after copying you can change the account back. But I have no first-hand expirience on this, so it might be different! Smile

Thank you, I was just a tad confused as there are loads of mobi files for d/l so I was not sure if it was a waste of time grabbing them. So are they likely to be 'homemade' versions of the ones bought from Amazon?

You can also send yourself books over 3G with that special email address that is created for you. But I would strongly recommend NOT to do it. Amazon stores those books in their cloud, and you never know if at some point they might notice that you send pirated stuff through their servers.

As for Amazon rips, I don't think there are sites specifically for Amazon rips, as many people use Sony readers or Nooks, and those don't require Amazon books like the Kindle does.
Because of that most pirated books are not released as .mobi, but rather as .epub. Easiest is just to google for the title of the book and add epub, i.e. "game of thrones epub". That should usually give you enough sites Wink There are also quite a lot of ebooks on WBB.
Just let Calibre convert the file to .mobi (takes only a few seconds) and you are good to go Smile

Yeah Calibre is quite good. I see a lot people here complaining about the UI of Calibre, but I think it is alright. While some things could be better, I had no problem knowing what to do. It's not as bad as Itunes in any case

But you should use another program when converting pdf files to mobi. I don't mean those "photo" pdfs (no idea if there is a special term for them), but those with text in them. You can tell by the file size, the text ones are only a few MB. For that you could use Mobipocket Creator, as it gives you better options, like removing page numers and so on which can be frustrating to have in an ebook. But then I almost never download pdfs except when I have to, so I don't have much experience with that.

have not had any issues storing my "personal documents" with their cloud service. They make it so easy now with the send to kindle app, it's just hard not to put all my stuff on my kindle. Razz

As I said, I don't really think that they check this. But still, some people don't want companies like Amazon to know they pirate stuff, and especially not for them to store it on their servers. I haven't heard from anyone getting problems, but I don't want Amazon to store my books for me Wink

Well I now have it and am pretty impressed, been doing a bit of research and have come up with a few good websites/apps some of you may be interested in.

This is a must have unless you have fingers the size of cocktail sticks and the patience of a saint...

haha yeah organizing collections is a bitch if you don't use third party software. I just want collections within collections now and my Kindle will be just how I want it.

Also here is another collection manager to check out.

I tried that one mate did not like it at all, in fact it messed up all my collection names (chopped off the last letter of each one) I was using the free version though with no GUI so perhaps that is why.

Any other software you think is worth having please post in here. Thanks.

Does anyone know if its possible to convert the language of an E-Book? I have done a bit of research on this but have yet to find a definite answer. Calibre does not have this option but it must be something thats been implemented on some software somewhere.

Or do you mean which language setting the book uses, i.e. for the dictionary? Calibre does have that function, just click on edit metadata.

What I mean is: I have found a few books I really want but only in Dutch. Can I translate entire Mobi files to English?

Yeah but how do you want to translate them? It's plain text. You could convert them to rtf or something with Calibre and then use Google Translate or Babelfish ( Laughing ) to translate the text, if that is what you want...
