Quote:
This decade-spanning epic from maestro Hayao Miyazaki is his most unique films to date, inspired by the true stories of Jiro Horikoshi, visionary designer of one the most beautiful airplanes in history — the famed Zero fighter — and the poet Tatsuo Hori, whose verses are brought to life by the vivid animation of Studio Ghibli.

So Much Win

something to look forward to. Smile

"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."

Yep. Too bad he's in his 70's, like a lot of other great people. The next 10 - 20 years are going to be as depressing as fuck when they all die.

Back OT: I can't wait to see this. Spirited Away is one of my favourite movies ever.

I did notice something regarding this one earlier today, apparently it's generating some sort of shit storm because of its anti-war sentiment

His son Goro is quite a promising successor.

well at this point goro´s movies are very weak compared to his father´s.
the animation style is there, but the heart, vision and everything else is missing.
lets hope he gets better with age.

I bet you're judging by Gedo Senki only. It's still REALLY good as a debut of a young director. I think he will learn to add heart and soul as soon as he gets more 'comfortable' with production process. From Up On Poppy Hill is much better, for example.

And Hayao makes weak stuff too. Ponyo, for example. Except for real-life scenes (like nursing home) it's actually weak as a story and characters.

ponyo is visually great and unique though, but yes, the story is like a superhero arielle Laughing
also its a film that literally glues my kids to the screen and takes away their ability of speech, great for when i need 1-2 hrs of peace Laughing

yea, i didnt see poppy hill yet, will definitely check it out

Absolutely looking forward to the English release of this, I don't care whether it's dubbed or subbed, just as long as it does come out! My wife is already sliding off the sofa at the thought, being as how she's an immeasurable Ghibli/Miyazaki fanatic. Even better is that this is only one of two Ghibli films coming this year! First is, obviously, this saga about the Zero Fighter from Miyazaki and then the other is currently in production and it's called "The Story of Princess Kaguya" (Kaguya-hime no Monogatari). Not by Miyazaki but by Studio Ghibli and Isao Takahata.

Director Hayao Miyazaki announced today at the Venice Film Festival that he would be retiring, effectively making "The Wind Rises" his last film.

Well, he certainly earned it. Maybe Shinkai Makoto can pick up the torch. Smile

I love shinkai's work but it will always be ultra realistic, he cant create fantastic worlds and characters like miyazake. i still have high hopes for goro, as mentioned before

Have you seen the "Children Who Chase Lost Voices"? Some really fantastical stuff there. Smile

Just about on the "Valley of the Wind" level. Not bad for his 3rd big-budget work. Given time and experience, he'll be just as good as Miyazaki.
