did quake 1 actually have any story to it ingame, not reading he manual ? all i remember is it was fancy looking , and u could go through three portals to pick ur difficulty and i remember zero story, just a lot of HUH HUH HUH jumping sounds, UMPF UMPFF shotgun blasts and YARGHH YARGHHH death shouts lol
quake 2 was really impressive start, crash landing n stuff, radio calls , objectives, i liked it, pretty immersive , but the world/maps was meh

Also, what was the difference between Doom 3 and Quake 4? Both were simplistic run and gun games, where in Doom 3 you run a tad bit slower (not by much). One was almost universally loved, while the other hated. I don't understand that. Other than shadow play with the graphics, there was nothing sophisticated in Doom 3. |
If I recall correctly, most of the dislike for Quake 4 and the general sense of disappointment at the time stemmed from its multiplayer part. People did like its classic single-player portion (solid, as per Raven tradition) but that was somehow perceived as a secondary aspect back then since the main expectations were for an improved and expanded Quake 3 Arena, which the game definitely failed to deliver.
I've always been a single-player aficionado myself so I never agreed with that, but that's another story

I guess it could be the SP to MP to SP zigzag created discomfort on both side (MP clowns not caring for SP, SP masterrace don't caring about MP). It's a shame. I think they even further muddied the water by releasing Derpions.

most people who still played quake when q4 came out, almost exclusively played modded versions, like RA,OSP CPM, Freeze, Instagib etc. and q4 wasn't a big enough upgrade to make them drop those and hope for mods for q4.

Hopefully not Comander Keen |
After the lawsuits, can't see that happening unless MS sweeps out a lot of staff.
