I uninstalled this.. it's definitely a step down from Vampyr, which I just played.
What broke it for me was the skill system. It works as a dice roll, so entirely random and luck based. Even when you have 4/5 in a skill, you can still fail the skill check, and when that happens, the path will be blocked forever as the game immediately autosaves. So you can't retry lockpicking a door after increasing the skill, you have to restart the fucking game.
But it's a dice roll, so even replayability is pretty much based on fucking luck. Fuck that.
Woah! How the fuck did they thought that was a good idea?
There is no way to manually save? Only auto saves?
Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro | AMD Ryzen 5800X3D + be quiet! Dark Rock 4 | KFA2 RTX 4080 | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4 @3600MHz | Samsung 860 Evo 500GB + 1TB + 10TB WD Blue | Corsair RM750x | LG 27GL83A + LG 27GL850 | Fractal Define R6 | Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth | DeathAdder Chroma
But guuuuuyzzzz!!! Autosaving iz thee onlee way to go. Just imagine if you could savescum. It would completely remove the challenge and destroy ze imersions and most of all it would mean aknowledging that the player should be allowed to decide anything by themselves. Like when the correct time to save is. Which obviously can not be allowed!!!!
It's 2018 you PC gaming babies! grow up!!!....... or something... idk....
the problem is not autosave but the game being a technical mess, like very bad, and some bad mechanics. tried to lockpick a door in the second chapter, the lockpick broke couse i didnt had enough skill level, game autosaved and i couldnt lockpick that door again. same thing happens with some second objectives when youre given 2 of them and one gets stuck couse you try to do something that youre underleveled.
finished too and what saved it for me was the atmosphere and the story, the voiceover was good too.
I didn't get along with the protagonist's voice. The same actor that voiced Jonathan Reid in Vampyr is doing the voice for Pierce and his performance is almost identical.
Are you sure is a dice roll? I think is a fixed skill requirement.
Yeah, it's been confirmed on the Steam forum.
For example: locks don't have certain difficulty, such as 'easy', 'medium' or 'hard'. Instead, skills act like a percentage, to a total of 100%.
So having 2/5 in lockpicking, gives you 40% chance of success, for every lock in the game. So even with 4/5 (80%), you can still fail.
I'd be okay with this if I could at least savescum, or retry (as is possible every other RPG with dice rolls) but that's not possible either.

Think of it as an alternate timeline then where the good doctor is a detective.
hmmm, i really wanna get into this game, but its hard..
As an Die hard Lovecraft Fan, who did read every single story from him im kinda let down from this game..
the first thing that destroys teh atmosphere for me is the way teh People talk, the words they use, that is NOT how the people talk in Lovecrafts books..
Its not old, classy enough..The way the people talk in this game is to modern, cant explain it better i think you know what i mean.. At least the ones actually reading his books..
i played for 2 hours now, so theres still hope..
Also, theres "The sunken City" also an upcoming lovecraftian Game...
But for now, i really digged "Conarium" more then this game...Conarium was way closer to the Lovecraft feeling of his books and the visuals of the artefacts and everything was really nice..When i played conarium for the first time, i was like, damn, these dev“s really know Lovecraft and his visions..The art looked exactly like i thought it would from reading the books..So the devs really went out of theyr way to get this right, wich they did..The game was kinda based on the "Mountains of Madness" wich is one of teh best stories form Lovecraft. I wish someone would make an awesome Movie out of the Mountains of Madness..But probally they would kill it, like they did with Stephen Kings "The Dark Tower"..
Just reached chapter 10 but unfortunately the more I play, the more I'm being disappointed by how low budget, amateurish, and incomprehensible (its dialog system design at least) the game is.
Sure, Amnesia didn't have as many (poorly animated) cutscenes, nor any characters to provide the extremely limited interaction with this game offers, but was able to deliver something of a much more consistent quality, 8 years ago.
Don't like this comparison? Fine. Then compare it to Dark Corners of the Earth. When that game was released in 2005 it was extremely outdated, because of how long it was stuck in development. Yet, its design and presentation is much more solid.
I like that I'm playing a Call of Cthulhu game, I can't say it's 100% disappointing. But it feels like it's worth $10 tops.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"

yeah, towards the end you can't be bothered by finishing the story, it becomes so "they no longer care about the game"

It had a consistency in its mechanics, presentation and world.
Here you don't know when choosing something will lock you to that choice, sometimes the characters refer to things that I probably missed with my choices leading to small gaps in the narrative, and the world seems to be comprised by "the asylum level", "the art gallery level", etc.
Then you have stuff like the video cutscenes using a much lower audio mix than the real time stuff, leading to another disconnect in its presentation.

I finished it and I didn't really understand how any of my choices shaped my ending. Wow, very poor.

Yeah, it all starts to go shit around chapter 7-8.

Dark Corners of the Earth is not a c&c based game and it's far from having consistency. The game starts one way and ends in a completely other way.
I haven't encountered many dialogue problems unlike Vampyr, where it was quite a mess. But there were a few narrative strings that didn't quite tie up. That whole Cat thing didn't lead anywhere. However, the storytelling is a bit confusing by design to fit better with the whole going insane thing and it works out quite nicely. I haven't had the chance to replay the game yet and see how other choices affect the course of events. I can think of a few moments that could play out differently.
The production value is pretty bad indeed. The cutscenes are terrible, the visuals are extremely outdated, the animations are laughable (Cat's left eye goes into spasms every few seconds), etc. I'm not going to defend these or the fact that the game is overpriced, however, I didn't let these problems ruin my experience. The artistic direction is great, the story is enticing and the sound design has some qualities to it. These are enough to create a Cthulhu-esque atmosphere.
To me it is, one of my favorite Metallica songs as well. Actually captures the Lovecraft vibes pretty well
From what I read, a big impact for the endings are the 2 skills you can't level by spending points on (medicine and occultism), except in the beginning of the game.
(I think that sums up my complaints about this game, with its wonky skill and dialog system; you need prior knowledge of what's going to happen or what the impacts will be)
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

Of course Dark Corners of the Earth it is a Call of Cthulhu game, it is based on some of the most popular stories of the Mythos.
It does change to the point where you fight and kill the Gods, point taken. But I think this isn't as much of a problem for general audiences. (And I will take that over the "shooting" (if we can even call it that) in this game)
Regardless of comparisons. My opinion is this game is a waste of the license, and I'm not basing this solely on the poor technical side. It feels like the work of amateurs overall. Some good moments here and there but not enough to elevate the poor whole. 5/10

OMG haha I kind of thought of it "Call of Cthulhu" somehow

There's a few different ones but my understanding isn't the best either for the more complete mythos and lore H.P LoveCraft built up.
(Who names their kid the Love Craft anyway? Eh there's worse names.)
Dagon, Leviathan, Hydra and C...Big C.
(Well Sleepy C more like being all dreaming or something.)
i dont get it, did they name Cthulhu different in this game?
isnt he the dreamer, who the fuck is the leviathan?
this is confusing...
Follow the story, I don't think you need to make any particular choices to find out who/what the Leviathan is.

EDIT: And the Shoggoth and some other stuff.
The Shoggoth isn't a singular being but rather a race. From what I remember, the Elder Things created them for labor. The Shoggoths turned on their masters and pretty much annihilated them.
i know, i know..im a lovecraft fan myself and are familiar with all his storys..
But in this game its just strange to "USE" the name leviathan instead of Cthulhu...
thats what i meant...
