Could it be that 15-fps "bug" in fights some people on the Steam forum have/had?

@Nui

There are two ways to "speed up", one is on keyboard and the other on controller. With a controller you have to pause to press LT and speedup -- but you can pause in cutscenes so enabling/disabling speed up can be done at any time, anywhere.

Try this, it may help Smile Someone made two mods, one decreases the speed up booster from FIVE times speed, down to TWO times. Much more applicable for general use, neh? The other mod increases the 15fps battle animations to 24fps as well as adding the 2x booster. That makes battles surprisingly more fluid when running at 24fps (for the animations, general scene runs at 30 and UI/effects run at 60)

What 15 fps bug? You mean that the game was designed to run at 15 fps during battle?
I dont even know if the transition screen is affected by this. Its some smooth psychedelic color nonsense. Hard to see frame rate in that. I dont frame rate is the problem here. This screen is either trying to look cool (fail) or it tries to mask loading times which in this version cannot be the problem. Similar thing with saving/loading. Fucking pathetic.

PSX version also doesnt remember battle cursor positions beyond battles.

I also fixed the frame rates in battle with ePSXe. Auto detection of vram was the problem, set it 4GiB manually...

Will try retro arch mednafen core as well. That worked well for me with FF7 and 8. Im very close to deciding against this port, due to the speed up implementation. Emulating even with random encounters may just be or at least feel faster.

I had noticed the slow into-battle times too, I thought it was a caching issue.. but it seems like it's a Unity one instead Mad

@ sabin
Interesting, thx. 24fps and faster animations is probably nice to have.
Still that doesnt even address my greatest problem with this, loading/saving/transition screens speed. I dont mind the speed up either. Im used to crazily high speed ups. If you can switch quickly that is no problem at all, but alas I cant in this version, because F1 is a terrible key.

Thx for the movie tip. Im not sure that works with a keyboard though. I thought I tried to press every button, but probably at least pausing should work, right?
Btw you have to pause the game to speed it up with a gamepad? Thats stupid. Again, I prefer an emulator...

I cannot imagine that this isn't just some stupid design. Like they're masking loading times that aren't there in the pc version. The psx version HAS horrendous loading times.

Yeah because on the gamepad LT (or L1? I forget) is Speed Up and those are already assigned buttons, so they only function for boosters in a pause menu or menu screen. Whereas, on the keyboard, sometimes F1 doesn't trigger depending on the scene. It's finicky :\ Hopefully they fix the battle loading screen times Sad

A 2.3 GB update was released.
http://steamcommunity.com/app/377840/discussions/0/357284131806940315/

No changelog yet but a large part of it was due to the movie files being re-encoded and there's these patch notes as well but I think that's for the mobile version of the game.

- The fog effect on the world map causing the screen to turn white on devices with certain video cards.
- Dismounting a Chocobo near Chocobo's Forest causes the Chocobo to appear above the forest.
- Dismounting a Chocobo directly below Ipsen's Castle causes Zidane to freeze.
- During the ending, a portion of the subtitles overlap before the previous sentence has finished.
- Other minor bugs fixed.

It's less blurry but the filter isn't ideal though without the source assets (Being lost or how it was, mostly lost?) it's probably as good as it gets short of someone re-texturing it all manually.

https://merup.github.io/FFIX-Field-Patch/comp1?v=2da11772e7ec601804773181502dfa43948663ff

EDIT: Reminds me a bit of the oh-so-oddly-named Waifu2x scaling.

Such as here in a PSX emulator for FF7
https://reshade.me/forum/general-discussion/214-screenshot-thread?start=2880#21198
It's sharper but things are less "defined" or how to call it.
(Like those previous attempts with SaI or HQ scaling.)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=551612

That's how it could have been had someone somewhere not lost the source assets, unfortunate that such things happen but not too unexpected especially for older software I suppose and for newer developer studios until a more robust backup solution has been implemented. (More than one disk and kept in a secure area, not in the attic of some ex employee as sometimes found. Razz )

It looks very sexy, at least in the smaller version in Prudis link.

But JBs bigger version looks rather strange with that new processing.

Was following that from earlier, nice to see it in-game. Smile

https://twitter.com/Ze_PilOt/status/1078688869229449220

https://imgur.com/gallery/K1R3wJZ

And other examples but for FF IX it's that tweet and the background gallery.

I like what it can do for some games. Smile

EDIT: Hexen for example.

Though the results will be a bit hit and miss but the backgrounds here were pretty well upscaled. Smile

Or the various LucasArts games spread throughout the thread.
https://www.resetera.com/threads/ai-neural-networks-being-used-to-generate-hq-textures-for-older-games-you-can-do-it-yourself.88272/page-10

But that's more general use and upscaling, for this game well it's good to have something that isn't filtered and upscaled hastily since the original art seems to have been lost at least in part with only some surviving material at least from how it's looking like.

https://www.neogaf.com/threads/the-lost-art-of-final-fantasy-ix-mama-robotnik-research-thread.551612/

The game would be looking excellent had the source assets still remained, but this works well too.

Yeah those were the first real eye opening results from that thread and the various models for the AI training algorithm.

Good art and no problems with excessive white or black highlights thus little in the way of artifacts and even from the original lower-res game asset rips it still makes a really good job upscaling it and it still maintains excellent detail.

It might not be able to beat out having the original higher-res art if this was preserved and backed up but for older titles these source assets aren't always available for one reason or another and AI upscaling can be a good alternative, later on in the thread there's even a blurb about NVIDIA and Nintendo using it for the Shield and Twilight Princess although in Nintendo's case ever since their start they have preserved and kept back ups of what they've done since the end of the 1800's and then into the modern day as a video game giant.

And this is just the beginning, with more advanced AI and additional training methods this could get even better.

There's been attempts with some of the actual mobile to PC Final Fantasy games and there are more extensive efforts for Final Fantasy 7 fixing various things and even redoing the somewhat poor translation (Not as poor as FF8 though.) but for the newer games on more complicated game engines I'm not sure, this is the game data wrapped through Unity engine I believe and that probably complicates things compared to say running it through a actual emulator and having more options and functions at disposal.

Font is one thing but remaking the UI system that's not easy.

This Will Work with the Moguri files, but not if you install Moguri completely. You need to move the "p0data#.bin" files into the "HD" folder in "ModFiles". This means, that Only the HD backgrounds will be used from the Moguri mod, and none of the other features.

Sad
