i like sammys better, my last six 320gig(1 year old) seagates bricked after the stress i gave them but my four 160gig(3 years old) and two 80gig(5 year old) sammys still work
never had a problem with a sammy
still have a warranty on those six failedgates and can exchange them so... on monday will swamp them from two 1T sammys
or something else more dependable
the funny thing is my 560mb(13 year old) Ibm drive and my external 10 gig(8 year old) WD still works
Apparently Western Digital Caviar Black is very good and fast drive from what reviews are saying but is also most expensive, it goes for around $100 comparing to 80$ from different companies
I also have Seagate Barracuda 1TB 16mb cache & WD green for storage
I would buy Caviar Black but instead bought green one and will buy 300gb 10k VelociRaptor
One thing I love about WD is they offer 5 year warranty for their Caviar Black drives
AFAIK the seagates are the fastest ones (7200.12 version) and these are the ones I bought. Check some reviews/comparisons, tomshardware has useful info. The (new) 7200.12 models from seagate are very quiet and cool too.
As for reliability, I believe its a matter of luck with any brand. Never had problems with a seagate, but as I said, I think I'm just lucky. The only drive that died on me was an old maxtor (way before seagate bought them).
