use cabs to go safely but they're pretty expensive, but if you've got the money then good, subways are cheaper but stay in moderately crowded areas, not too crowded not empty, cuz both will get your stuff stolen, and if empty then you might get mugged with a weapon
and don't eat subway shit, other than that, you're good to go

I've been on 3-4 trips to NYC in the last few years ... we walked and took the subway everywhere ... really you don't have much to worry about in manhattan... especially if you are not alone. we even went bowling in harlem at night Smile

I though New York was pretty safe when I was there.

What out for counterfit bills esp if you buy something off a vendor and you get change back. I got a fake $10.

I would buy one of the 2 day tour bus passes where you get to get off and on when you want. I used the one with the statue of liberty on the side. Friends took another one and it broke down on them.

If you're not American I would recommend that you catch up with some NFL, NHL, NBA or MLB. Sadly the NHL is done for the season, don't know about the rest.

I saw a Rangers game when I was there last autumn and that was a great experience. Funny thing happened when we (me and my two sisters) were entering the Madison Square Garden and was showing our tickets, the ticketguy said, before we had a chance to say anything "Oh here come the swedes!". We were all like, wtf, how does he know that we're swedish? According to the ticketguy he could tell a mile away that we were swedes cause the only hot blond girls that went to Rangers games were swedes Razz

Anyways, sports is my advice.

We were there for five days and bought some sort of week pass for the subway and it was great, didn't cost much and you can use it all you want, makes going around a breeze.

Other than that, go see the park, go catch a play, go see ground zero, go across the brooklyn bridge by foot (awesome view). Go to the bronx, queens or harlem by the way, skyskrapers gets old pretty quick Smile

For the first time ever, they changed the traffic through Times Square. They closed a few of the main roads, and they slapped a bunch of chairs out in the middle of the road.

Feels great to sit in the middle of Times Square at night, it might sound dumb, but just get there and have a seat, you'll see. Wink

People kept coming up to me "Is something going on?"

"Nope, just sitting!"

"Oh!"

Haha.

about .com has a nice guide to new york
http://gonyc.about.com/od/planyourtriptonyc/ss/travel_planner.htm

And ud be suprised that often renting an apartment can be as cheap as the more expensive hostels. especially if you traveling with company.

anyways the guide comes highly recommended.
