The difference is that caffeine in moderation can actually have health promoting benefits, nicotine is the same to a lesser degree.
It's not so much the active chemical but the route of administration that's the problem. Don't ban nicotine, ban cigarettes!
Please don't take the juvenile route of exaggerating something to the point of absurdity just to get a point across.

And what has banning of anything ever accomplished! Nothing! The smokers, now-days, have this big stigma on their faces. They're to blame for the death of so many! No they aren't! It was the big-ass companies, as always, who needed money, but that's the story we've all heard before.
I'm not exaggerating, just stating how it seems to me (in totally oversimplified way, truth, but nevertheless). I would never ban coffee because it has caffeine in it, I'm not stupid. Just saying that you can say the same for a billion things today.
Uuu, this food has tons of additives in it. It was made from GMO, bla bla... We're all going to die sooner or later anyways.
It angers me that suddenly all the people have become so aware of the things that surrounds them. Where were you 20-30-40 yrs ago? It angers me because people are just listening, blatantly, what the media tells them. Oh, we suddenly have global warming, and ozone holes in atmosphere. Well you know what: It's your own goddamned fault, now cope with it!

Oh wait so because the realisation has happened only recently that means people can't do anything to improve things? There is no logic in that, awareness always has to occur before action. It's called refinement.
So you think that cocaine should still be legal just because it took people a while to realise the negative implications? You have no argument.

No people can't do anything to improve the current situation. Look around a bit. We are knee deep in shit, and there is no easy way out of it.
And you say people were clueless before? No they weren't, they just weren't allowed to think freely, like now.
I don't get what you want to say with that last sentence, where did I ever said such a thing (or in that manner)?

I think the point dingo is trying to make is that the same argument could be made for a lot of other things deemed harmful by those whose work it is to deem things harmful in order to modify our behaviour. We are probably on the verge of some kind of 'fat tax' to counter this so-called epidemy of obesity. And the regulators are just motivated by the financial implications of providing health-care to overweight people and not some altruism.

I, for one, never smoked a fucking thing (cigs, weed, nothing) but almost all my friend do when im around so i see the difference between them being drunk and high on weed. Alcohol is fucking people up big time and sometimes when they fall in addiction they are much more miserable than weed-addicts (there aren't that many, really).

Weed addiction is all mental. Not physical (aside from not being able to sleep for like 2 weeks when you stop, takes forever to fall asleep).
When I quit the ganja, man, my appetite and being able to fall asleep were fucked up for a good 2-4 weeks (smoked weed for fuck...13 or more years...like everyday, least 4 or 5grams a day).
