Nope, hasn't been a wipe since 2004 was it? Some DB bugs and set backs, but not a wipe.

That's what I mean, I figured everyone with a "1969/1970" join-date were "older" members and their accounts had been put back after a crash, or something, causing the join date to bug out.

When the previous forum was upgraded to this current version we didn't bother to convert the old data, that is the wipe, I think it was about 6 years ago.
The forum software has been adjusted to use the main site logins, and when you first view the forum while logged in it creates a forum account for you. It didn't use to set the account creation data at first, we also didn't store account creation for the main site, so we couldn't use that either.
1/1/1970 data is 0 in unix timestamps, that's where the date comes from.

yeah 1970 that's a classic but what about jan 31 1969? is it adjusted for timezone after date is initially set?

It's dec 31, not januari. People who have the timezone setting in their profile set to use GMT minus several hours will see that date.
