actually, it's easier to code pixelshaders and UI elements when it's to fit a single resolution
one less thing to concern with when debugging graphical artefacts
though i agree, lazy and damn annoying

I am using McAfee....how do add the Riddick files to the trusted list?

I just tried to run the game again...and it asked for the serial. I guess either I have to shut off McAfee when I want to run the game or add the file.

Can someone tell which files to add and how to McAfee?

THanks

Nit

wow, this game is much more of a trip down memory lane than i expected. the textures, the character models, the melee, the shooting, they all make me feel like i'm 5 years younger. it's great!

the game defaulting to 800x600@60Hz is just a nice touch next to all those, but i must say i loved the option that allows you to switch between '8 bit int' and '16 bit float' color mode.

Ay, usually I don't do long gaming sessions, but today, I've got the a really bad cold, so I can't do anything outside, and I've got no movies, so I just played all day. xD It's fun to do that on rare occasions, when you've found something that really grabs you. This game really made me addicted. Much thanks to the story and the characters.

Last time I did it, was with Dead Space (though I didn't finish it in one sitting).

feel better mate ...i hope it is not the swine flew Wink

i just started dark a (played bb when it cames out) and it is just a shame they didn't improove the graphic engine into todays visuals, but from other aspects i love this art of work Smile its good at least as the first one so far (played only 20-30 min's.

What's the point of putting the first Riddick game here, just graphical update or something else? That's like putting Sims2 on Sims3 game disc or something.

They totally redid all of the graphics. Everything else is the same.

No. They would be like remaking Sims 2 in the Sims 3 engine, while keeping the gameplay identical, and including it on the disc.

Also, trying to make an allegory about Riddick, based on The Sims, is pretty much complete fail.

A better example would be, like, if they included a gameplay-identical remake of Killzone 1 using the Killzone 2 engine, and included it with Killzone 2.

No it isn't because they are both games and sequels Rolling Eyes I'm not comparing bloody genres here, so it's somethign like putting Far Cry on Far Cry 2 disk with a graphical update, happy now?

what are you complaining about?
the first one was a great game and i'm happy to have it, and have it up to date
infact started replaying it first now, and then continue straight to athena once i'm through butcher bay

and they did update the engine
http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,682875/Riddick-Escape-from-Butcher-Bay-Old-and-new-engine-in-comparison/Practice/
i'd say the difference is pretty striking

i wish they would have done the same for thief1 when thief2 was released.. the changes to the lighting and texture engine were so huge that the ugliness of T1 takes effort to get over at first

A little googling, or reading of Wikipedia, would explain the answer for you.

Dark Athena started out as a next-gen remake of Butcher Bay (they said they felt that by being Xbox/PC only, Butcher Bay didn't reach the largest audience possible). Originally, the new Dark Athena levels were planned as a very short mini-campaign, to supplement the Butcher Bay remake. Over time, though (specifically, during the months after Sierra/Activision dropped the game, and before Atari picked it up; in other words, they never stopped working on the game, even when they didn't have a publisher backing them), the Dark Athena content became so large, that they decided to expand it into a full-blown sequel.

So, whereas their original idea was for the Dark Athena campaign to be a small bonus game in what was primarily going to be marketed as a remake of Butcher Bay, the product eventually evolved into the Dark Athena campaign itself being the primary focal point of the package, with the Butcher Bay remake serving as the bonus content. Big switcheroo.

nope your source is wrong, this game started as a exclusive remake for the xbox360 because original xbox Riddick wasn't compatible with xbox360 emulation,
later they where approached by Disel to add bonus contend so they added the short story from the Riddick cartoon movie 'Dark Athena',
then the money problems began during the months after Sierra/Activision dropped the game,
Atari said to them that it will pick it up only IF they rename it to 'Dark Athena', make the bonus campaign larger (the original idea was to base it on the cartoon but after Atari push they had to rewrite the whole story to force the campaign, you see that...you really do ), add multiplayer and go multiplatform PS3 and PC...
thats why PS3 butcher bay campaign looks so halfassed comparing to the xbox360, when athena campaign looks the same on both platforms

Spiderman wrote:

Wrong. It was announced for Xbox 360 and PS3 from day one:
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/chroniclesofriddickassaultondarkathena/news.html?sid=6171213&mode=news
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/790/790608p1.html
http://n4g.com/News-41128.aspx

Quote:

Okay, first off, there is no Riddick cartoon movie called "Dark Athena." There IS a cartoon Riddick movie, but it's called "Dark Fury."

Assuming you are referring to Dark Fury, you're still wrong. Dark Fury's basic plot concept is similar to Dark Athena's in that they both center around mercenary ships headed up by a woman, but that's about it. The actual events of the two stories are completely different. In Dark Fury, the ship's owner, Antonia, collects criminals and freezes them into statues, as "art." In Dark Athena, Revas captures people to turn them into cyborgs.

Chronologically, they're also completely separate. Both Butcher Bay and Dark Athena take place before Pitch Black, whereas Dark Fury takes place shortly after Pitch Black (but before the Chronicles of Riddick movie).

Dark Athena is in no way based on the Dark Fury cartoon movie.

Quote:
then the money problems began during the months after Sierra/Activision dropped the game,

I never saw Starbreeze publically discuss any money problems. Link?

Quote:
Atari said to them that it will pick it up only IF they rename it to 'Dark Athena',

No. It was always called "Dark Athena," from the very first day that it was originally announced by Sierra. The same links that prove that it was announced as a multiplatform game, also prove the fact that it was always called "Dark Athena":
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/chroniclesofriddickassaultondarkathena/news.html?sid=6171213&mode=news
http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/790/790608p1.html
http://n4g.com/News-41128.aspx

Quote:
make the bonus campaign larger

The decision to expand the bonus campaign was made during the game's "limbo" period, when they were without a publisher. Starbreeze said that, even during this time, they "never let up on development." It was NOT Atari's idea:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Riddick:_Assault_on_Dark_Athena#Development
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/12/02/riddick-dark-athena-coming-early-09-features-new-10-hour-camp/

Quote:
(the original idea was to base it on the cartoon but after Atari push they had to rewrite the whole story to force the campaign, you see that...you really do )

Bullshit. The original press release about the game from Sierra, which was put out back in May 2007, mentions the basic plot details of Dark Athena, including the fact that "Players must face a large, bloodthirsty operation led by the dreaded Captain Revas and her slaves-turned-controllable combat drones":
http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/chroniclesofriddickassaultondarkathena/news.html?sid=6171287&tag=result;title;9

Again: Dark Athena was NEVER based on the cartoon movie Dark Fury. The plots are COMPLETELY different, and are set years apart from each other.

Quote:
, add multiplayer and go multiplatform PS3

Again, the initial announcements from Sierra in May 2007 included the facts that it would be on PS3, and have multiplayer.

It was actually at Diesel's own insistence that they decided to include a multiplayer mode, but still, the decision was made BEFORE they publically announced the game:
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3173334

Bottom line: the fact of the matter is that Dark Athena was PUBLICALLY ANNOUNCED FROM DAY ONE as being multiplatform, and including multiplayer.

Quote:
and PC...

Although it is true that the PC version was not announced until Atari signed the game, there is no information out there that indicated that the development of a PC version was a requirement for Atari to be willing to pick up the game, or that the PC version was Atari's idea.

If you have proof of this, show me.

Quote:
thats why PS3 butcher bay campaign looks so halfassed comparing to the xbox360, when athena campaign looks the same on both platforms

What? Even if what you just said made any sense, it's completely irrelevant. Again, it was announced for Xbox 360 and PS3 at the same fucking time, in the exact same singular press release.

For the record, I'm guessing that you're a troll or something.

Gee Cedge, after that dressing down by you I wonder how you would remark if someone really got under your skin?
You made your point, but you had to spoil it at the end by being an insulting prick.

I did some side by side comparison of 360 vs PC version (same monitor), and PC by default has gamma set way too bright. Gamma setting of 20 is closer to 360 version and looks much better. Other than that both version looks identical, of course PC version has higher res, better FPS and can do more than 4xAA Smile
