looking at something high-end, and yeah quad core
the 965 (3.2ghz) is insane i think for the price, so im looking at either the 940 (2.93ghz) which is half the price of the 965, or the 920 (2.66ghz) which is half the price of the 940
-whats the best bang for my buck - the 940 is within my price range, but is it worth it compared to the 920?

Missing two pieces of info. One, what are you upgrading from and two, what you use the computer for. If you're a gamer then you won't see much improvement in fram-rates with the 920 as compared to a c2d 84/8500 and even a 940 won't give you twice the performance of a 920 so the 'bang for buck' theory doesn't hold because cpu performance doesn't scale with price. It's just about bragging rights.
You could upgrade to an E8500 for much less money because unlike the i7 it doesn't involve buying a new mobo/ram. The money could be better spent on the most usual bottle-neck (wrt gaming) i.e. video card.
If you use your computer for things like rendering/encoding and you have an older quad (which you should) like the Q6600 then you will see huge performance gains but if you already have a QX then those gains will be smaller.

well theres 2 pc's here, the one i mainly use (for games, movies, graphic design [2d/3d] is a qx6700, and the other pc is an ooooold p4 3.06ghz dell (5/6 years old), used for movies and cad work, is in serious need of upgrading.
given that ive had this pc for about 2 years, im basically going to get rid of the dell and build a new pc using the cpu/motherboard/gfx card from this pc, and upgrade my main one: so essentially, no two ways about it, ill need a new cpu and motherboard, which is why im looking at the i7's
i guess what im asking, is the change between the 940 and the 920 significant enough - is the 920 somewhat underpowered compared to the 940, or is the 920 a great cpu, and the 940 for those who dont mind paying a premium for a small step-up in power?
also, could you recommend a good 1366 mobo and set of ram to go with it? in my current pc im using corsairs which i havent had any problems with, so am leaning towards going with them again.

Well, considering it is very possible to overclock a 920 to 3.8-4.0 GHz states, I really see no real reason to waste money on the higher end models.

question is do you really need that kind of performance now? could wait few months more and save a ton of money buying the i5, especially since there will be cheaper board and ddr3 ram prices will have gone down too.

definately cant afford to wait another couple of months - i live in a third world country, so thats another couple of months plus another couple of months, and im sure the pricing will be way over the top, so ill grab it now
im going to go for the 920, and an evga 285 superclocked (which is like $20nzd more than the normal 285 on this site, so why the hell not ), and grabbing the PC POWER & COOLING SILENCER 610W PSU (current pc has a psu from these guys, and im very happy with it)
still not sure about the mobo yet, ill dig into some p6t reviews and see what the word is - and yeah i checked the price... things cost more than the flamin cpu!! hahaha
all thats left i think is to pick a case - any suggestions? looking for a mid-sized tower, thinking more about functionality than style, because it doesnt need to look flashy.
another question - i also game on a 30" screen running 2560x1600 - because im going with the 920 which saves me a fair bit of cash over the 940, is it worth getting a second gtx285 for sli? never run sli before, but my understanding is for gaming at high resolutions for recent games that are set up for sli, there is quite a significant benefit - so would it be worth it?

Make sure you get a Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme 1366 to cool that baby properly, then overclock it to 4.0GHz.
