I dunno...Offset was never really out there hyping the game on their own, much. They haven't been in people's faces going on about how it will be the best game on earth or anything. They've been fairly modest, I'd say.

I'm also referring to the myriad trailers that always appear 12-18 months before the game. It's insulting and it's aggravating.
Just look at games like White Gold and Mercenaries 2. WG was supposed to be out early LAST YEAR. Merceneries 2 also had a Q2-2007 release date. How about Prototype? Announced for release last year, now due out NEXT year. Deus Ex 3? Not due out for at least another YEAR. Splinter Cell Conviction? Trailer after trailer after trailer, due for release 2007.. now CANCELLED and taken back to the drawing board.
If you like, I'm sure I could list another 20 games, at least, that have been advertised repeatedly -- and then left for years on end before release. It's insulting.
It's just a cheap and nasty trick to increase demand and gain free publicity. For that reason alone, I refuse to take part in it -- and WILL pirate those games.
(except Mercs2, as I've already got a 360 preorder going)

Deus Ex 3 only had a small teaser trailer as far as I can recall. But I agree with your point.

It's like this for most games, and quite a few movies, as well. We get teaser posters two years in advance, sometimes. Is it really that painful to know about something in advance? There is plenty else to enjoy in the meantime...

Um, games getting delayed is unavoidable, in many cases. It's not hype-building; it's delaying games, when they need extra work.
| Quote: | | Splinter Cell Conviction? Trailer after trailer after trailer, due for release 2007.. now CANCELLED and taken back to the drawing board. |
Trailer after trailer after trailer? Excuse me? They did one single teaser trailer, dude.
| Quote: | | If you like, I'm sure I could list another 20 games, at least, that have been advertised repeatedly -- and then left for years on end before release. It's insulting. |
It's insulting, that games are sometimes delayed so that they can attempt to be reach the quality that is expected? I'd say that's a hell of a lot more respectful and considerate, than releasing an unfinished game that hasn't been in the oven long enough to reach it's potential. Miyamoto famously said that a delayed game is eventually released, but a bad game is bad forever. Which would YOU rather have?
| Quote: | | It's just a cheap and nasty trick to increase demand and gain free publicity. For that reason alone, I refuse to take part in it -- and WILL pirate those games. |
So, you pirate games because they are announced far in advance?
That one of the worst fucking excuses I have ever heard. There is absolutely NO merit in that. There is simply no justifying or defending that mindset.

Awww, did I hurt your poor ickle feelings?
Why such an annoyed reply, hmm? I'm entitled to my opinions, whether you like it or not.
1. I *know* we get posts and trailers in advance. I dislike it. Deal with it, this is personal preference. My annoyance is that these "advance" posters are becoming more and more "in advance" -- to the tune of YEARS now, rather than months.
2. Delayed? Bullshit. Most of these games aren't delayed due to quality control, they're delayed because the dev-team couldn't get their shit together properly.
3. A lone teaser trailer, really? Wrong. There was TWO teasers and a dev-walkthrough.
4. Again, these aren't delayed. I'm not talking solely about DELAYS, I'm talking about pre-release hype -- only, in most cases, this pre-release hype happens a YEAR before release. Again, personal preference that I don't like it. Stop crying about my opinions because you damn sure aren't going to change them.
5. I pirate THESE games because I dislike having a game dangled on the end of a hook .. and then whipped away when I get excited about them. As I said, which you conveniently ignored, it's a cheap trick to drum up hype and desire.
6. They do? Really? Odd, I don't recall any "way in advance" hype about Heroes. Now you're just trolling. There has been ONE teaser, released three months ago, and one full trailer - released last month.
Stop trolling.
Oh and before anyone thinks I'm needlessly flaming, I'm not. I'm just sick of having people think they've got the right to challenge and debate MY opinions. They're just opinions and nobody has the right to begrudge them or attempt to change them.

He's not trolling. His explainations are reasonable while your justification for pirating and entire outlook on pre-release trailers seem absurd.
"In my opinion", Of course.

I go more far, im against any teaser, trailer, poster and anything that means promove hype, before, after or in the release of the game, movie, or audiovisual product. The point of my absurdous proposal lie in that kind of advertisements wreck my game, movie, experience. Seriously.

I tend to avoid trailers of movies, because they often give away the best parts of said movie -- same reason why I'll ignore "making of" featurettes.

You saw the trailer of "The isle"? well i was in the cinema watching some other movie, and the trailer come out... that fucking trailer was a resume of WHOLE FILM!. Years later, i finish seeing the same trailer with a few more extension, was the MOVIE.

I don't mind hype, please don't get me wrong. I just don't like the current trend of hyping, or releasing trailers for, games that aren't even due out for another year. I hate it.

Acquired by Intel? One year ago?
| Quote: | It's been a year now that the Offset team has been at Intel.
At the start of last year, our little company was acquired, and we have since relocated to northern California. Since then, we have been making great progress on our game (still codenamed "Project Offset").
Being at Intel has allowed us access to a pool of resources we couldn't have dreamed of when we were an independent game developer. In the upcoming months you'll be seeing some of the results of this in the form of various media we'll be releasing on the site. And of course, eventually you'll see those results in the game itself.
Even though we're part of a much bigger company now, we still operate in a very independent way. We make all our own technical and creative decisions. For a team like ours, it's really an ideal situation. We don't have to deal with a publisher, which means all of the decisions we make are for the good of the game, not just to meet that next milestone payment.
We have been rather quiet during the past year, hard at work, but you'll be seeing much more from us in the upcoming months. Stay tuned. |

Also, new video (supposedly in engine): http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/312154.html
Notice the "Project Offset will be launching alongside Intel's Larrabee late this year to early next."

Is larrabee the raytracing chip? If it is, the game is probably going to be a hype machine for how awesome intel's new tech is. I'm so tired of that kind of hype :/.

Well, considering DX11 has removed ray-tracing support, I doubt it. But I won't be surprised if it is heavily "optimized" for Intel in the following method:
| Code: | if(platform == Intel)
runAt(60fps);
else
runAt(Math.Random(10,22)); |

Working for Intel ? They're probably fetching coffees or cleaning the toilets. What did they put in their resume ? "Experienced vaporware developer" ?
And that trailer made me yawn. Hope they do better at the next one in a year or so.

Smug.
There is no reason to believe that it will never be released. The developers just renovated their website, and mentioned a release date of late this year or early next year.
It's obvious now that Intel will position this to promote their Larrabee GPUs. They have a lot invested in this game.

Do I have a sign on me that says "Offset Software Complaints Department"?
For what it's worth, I liked their old site a lot better.
