|
 |
I plan to get one of the new phenom II X4 940 cpus soon (AM2+ unless an am3 comes out that is 3.0 stock with unlocked multiplier) and I'm having trouble figuring out which mother board to get.
I've got a nvidia 9800gx2 video card so i think im limited to nforce and geforce series boards, I was looking at the amd 790gx boards but they seem to be for ATI cards but im not sure.
this is one i was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131367 but it has no onboard video, I was thinking of using the on board video for physX and my 9800gx2 for rendering, if that is possible.
please help me find the right board, I will most likely be using my 4 gigs of ddr2 800 ram unless there is a good reason to upgrade to 1066. I wont be having 3 video cards, if anything I might be able to use my 8800gt for physX but maybe not because my power supply is only 750W.

AM2+ will only have the X3 as far as I'm aware.

Honestly these days, I wouldn't ever put my money into asus anymore. Their quality is turning into that of some jap rip off's you'd find on ebay. Their boards are quickly becoming hit or miss.

I've got this one sitting right next to me at the moment for my buddies new system. Supposed to be one of the best AM2+ boards.

those both look like great boards but I just learned that I need to get a nforce or geforce board, those 790 series are amd and they are made for crossfire and since I have a 9800gx2 and ill probably end up using my old 8800gt for physX, I will need a SLI board.
also more research I found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_future_AMD_Phenom_microprocessors
im looking at the Phenom II X4 945, its am3, 4 cores and stock 3.0.
but im wondering, how much of a performance difference in gaming there will be compared to the am3 3.0 vs the am2+ 3.0? will the ddr3 ram vs ddr2 and 4000mghz vs 3600mghz HT link really make that much of a difference?

sorry HunterHare - you should get your facts straight and stop posting bullshit. really.
You dont need a sli board for a single card. even if its a dual gpu card.
you could even use the 8800 gt as cuda/physx card on any board with 2 PCIe slots ( that`s the most stupid thing you could do btw...)
and you dont need a 750W psu for that rig.
My advice: sell that pos gx2, sell your 8800 gt, and buy one decent single gpu card.
less wattage needed, less heat, more power.

i have very little knowledge of using a second card for cuda/physx so i didnt know if it would work on a crossfire board or not, i knew a single card would work on any board with a pciE slot... and why is it stupid? does it only help out with certain games?
and what video card would you suggest?

physx is nothing more then a marketing gag. really. there are NO games that benefit. At least not on any modern system...
best bang for the buck would be either gtx 265 (nvidia) or 4870 (ati). both cost about 200 €. but you wont see a big difference performance wise i guess.
fastest single gpu card available is the gtx 285. It costs more then 300 € - but if you need power for very high resolutions... well...
The 9800gx2 is still a powerfull card, but I`d switch it and get myself a gtx260. sell both cards, and get a gtx260 + some cash you can spend on other components.
Well - it seems like noise and wattage isn`t important to you. you could just keep that gx2 and sell the gt.

thanks stefan, im actually going to get the setup you suggested for the guy in the other thread, that gigabyte mobo, the 720 X3, but im wondering what cpu cooler I should get with it? you think the stock cooler is good enough for a 3.4 clock? or should i get another?

actually the 940 stock cooling isnt too bad, it has copper heatpipes etc.
The 720 comes with the stock cooler made of alu, which is so so.
I personaly always go for a custom cooler, doesnt have to be expensive.
Its not that the phenom II at 3.4ghz gets alot hotter, cause you arent increasing the voltage.
But i prefer good cooling which is silent so i go with zalman for 5-6 years now.
i put the following zalman on my bros 940 at 3.4ghz
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118223
Under load the cpu doesnt get above 40C with the cooling being unhearable.
The prices for zalman dont seem as attractive on newegg as they do here in europe, but you wont regret the purchase ever.
EDIT: small tip, turn off the automatic rpm controll in the bios for the case/cpu fan, and use the included fanmate regulator to set the fan speed to the max possible without hearing it above your case/videocard fans.
