It will work, but don't know if it'll work at full speed. You shoud check if your MBO supports full speed in the second PCIE slot.

what veki said and check for jumpers. on my old dfi mobo for example, standard config is 16x for the upper slot and 1x or 2x for the lower one. when i moved my card down cause i exchanged the northbridge heatsink, i hat to set the jumpers so i'd get 8x on both slots.

on the mobo manual it says ((you can Set PCI Express graphics card on the PCI Express x8 slot (PCIEX8_1) as the first display)) then it says this : (((Note 3) If you are installing one PCI Express graphics card, be sure to install it in the PCIEX16_1 slot
for optimum performance. When two graphics cards are installed, the PCIEX16_1 slot will
operate at up to x8 mode))
does this mean it will work but only @ 8x speed ?? any idea ??

Yes. not sure if that will effect the bandwidth on the card though..?

Options

1. Go with just two pci fan controllers as you plan to do.

2. Install video card in 2nd slot and see if it makes any difference in real performance because for a lot of games the performance difference is negligible.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/pci-express-2.0,1915-10.html

And that is for a dual-gpu so your card might not even need 16x.

3. Ditch the pci fan controllers and consider one of those multi-fan controllers which fit into a drive bay.

i did buy the zalman ZM-MFC1 BK multi fan controller 2 weeks ago but i didn't like the performance, true it does make the case looks more pro but the maximum fans speed is reduced to only 1200rpm from 2200rpm too weak its a waste of time & money for overclockers, the pci controllers will spin the fans anything from 700rpm all the way to their maximum speed of 2200rpm & they're discreet & top quality unlike the zalamn which is very flimsy.
i will just install the other 2 pci controllers underneath the hd4850 & leave the one on top for controlling the gpu's akasa vortexx fan & the cpu's 120mm fan.thanks for your help Wink
