Posted: Sat, 21st Feb 2009 19:03 Post subject: is Enermax 500 Liberty Enough ? |
|
 |
i need advice from system builders mainly pro overclockers.
in the last 2 weeks i have upgraded my entire pc but kept my trust wrothy enermax liberty 500w psu & i'm now wondering if it has enough power for what i need ?
my pc specs:
Q6600 @ 3.3ghz
4 x 2gb ddr2 800 sticks slightly underclocked
hd 4850 slighlty overclocked
7 x 120mm case fans
1 x 640gb hard drive
1 x dvd writer
1 x front multi card reader
5 x usb devices aka printer,tv stick,xbox360 wireless receiver & usb wireless mouse.
is the 500w liberty enough ? i just want to be on the safe side not having my psu limiting my cpu or gpu. thanks

np buddy
if u overclock your q6 to 3ghz u will need at least 700w to be on the safe side
get yourself one quality 1kw psu and u are set for future, they are not that expensive

I'm running all this on a Corsair VX450w;
Intel Core 2 E7200 @ 3.4Ghz (Yes, Yes.. I know there's a huge power difference between 45 and 65nm chips)
2x2GB DDR2-800 (timings tightened and volts increase)
Sapphire Radeon 4850 (OCed, naturally)
Asus P5K-PRO P35
4 HDDs (1 IDE, 2 SATA, 1 SATA2)
1 DVDRW (SATA Optiarc 7203S)
6 USB devices (gamepad, PSP, wireless keyboard, Logitech MX518 on a port-powered hub. 4GB USB flash drive, iPaq pocket PC cradle)
3 LED 120mm fans, 1 standard 90mm fan.
.... ZERO issues. That's all on a VX450w.

Imho, the only usage for a 1000W PSU just now is for OC'd Quad Crossfire or 3 way SLI setups. The peak power draw for those GPU's alone is scary. Add a OC'd quad CPU and your adding another 150 to 200W under load.

CORSAIR CMPSU-850TX ....850W
or
HiperPower HPU-4M880 ....880W

I don't rate Corsair as a RAM manufacturer, never have. Ridiculously overpriced for sticks that are often beaten in performance by much, much, cheaper brands (like the godlike G.Skill) -- but! they do make excellent PSUs.
I doubt you'll go wrong with the TX850.

Just one of a bunch of glowing reviews.

I've got the VX450 at the moment, but planning on upgrading to the TX650 soon.

sabin1981 wrote: | I've got the VX450 at the moment, but planning on upgrading to the TX650 soon. | Those two are slightly better than the VX550, TX750 and TX850 since they are Seasonic designs versus CWT designs.
I choose mine over the TX750 because I didn't need that much power and some reviews claimed that it was pretty average regarding noise .
The TX650 has not only a solid +12V output, but is virtually silent working at the highest load of my system:http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/coolers/display/corsair-psu-roundup_7.html
If I had to buy another 650W PSU today(and if I had the dough) then it would be one of these:
http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/658
There's also a 850W version out there, but just like this one when compared to the other units it's expensive as hell.

Which is exactly why I have my beady eye on the TX650. Ultra-quiet, very powerful and VERY efficient with that power. I'm getting my 4870 in a few days (won't be able to use it till I'm back in Norway though...sigh) and I'm quietly confident my VX450 will power that nicely too, in the meantime while I wait to get the 650.

so i got the new corsair 850w psu today & fitted it in my case turned it on & all working alright but i noticed the +12v rail drops when i play games to 11.60v & keeps on going up & down anything from 11.70v to 11.98v is this normal because my 2 year old enermax liberty 500w was always rock solid @ 11.92v no matter what the load is it never changes .
EDIT:
its ok i've called the company today & they said they will replace it for me.

first TX850 drops to 11.60v
replacement TX850 drops to 11.54v

link above is for the everest voltage reading, the corsair staff think these readings are acceptable & are within the atx specs.
but i dont think they're acceptable since my 2 year old enermax liberty 500w was rock solid no matter what the load was & even the guy who deals with the returns at the shop where i bought the corsair from said he would return it & look for a different brand even though he thinks corsair is amongst the best psu manufacturers & they only use them for their pre-built pc's.

Most monitoring software out there can't read voltage values properly.
EDIT: The values shown in the BIOS tend to be a little more accurate. But not as much as a voltmeter.

Most monitoring software out there can't read voltage values properly. |
when i called the company where i bought the psu from they asked me the same thing & i said i got the readings from gigabyte mobo software & everest & once i said everest they said we wll issue RMA to return the psu.
i used to read my extremely reliable enermax liberty 500w with everest too.
EDIT:
voltage reading in the bios is no good because those readings are when the 12v rail is idle which is stable @ 11.98,it only goes mad once i start gaming (grid,fear2,gta iv..etc).

Over here with my TX650 I have 12.302V with everest and 12.30V from Gigabyte's Easytune.

i still would appreciate if cap'n cox can use everest ultimate to read his 12v rail voltage while gaming.
