We all know imdb's rating isnt really something that means much...but after doing some "top 100" checking I really started to wonder if the score on this board is even worth commenting Razz

Among the top rated movies i saw the following - tell me, how many of you have ever heard of these?

Comedy:
1. Muhsin Bey (1987)
4. Kibar Feyzo (1978)
5. Zügürt Aga (1985)
8. Süt kardesler (1976)
10. Hababam sinifi uyaniyor (1976)
11. Hababam sinifi tatilde (1977)
12. Khosla Ka Ghosla! (2006)
19. Nuovo cinema Paradiso (1988)

So among the funniest movies ever made , almost half of the top 20 list are made out of movies that atleast I have never heard of.
So my question to you lot is - how many of you have ever heard of the 9 I listed?

Edit: apart from turks that is.

shitloads of new stuff in my pc. Cant keep track of it all.

Well almost all of those movies are turkish, almost voted on exclusively by non-US (probably turkish) males as 10/10 ... so kinda skews the results.

and Nuovo cinema Paradiso sticks out as being the only "famous" movie on that list (it also won an oscar, golden globe, etc) ...

No offence to turks, but they are really weird. When times magazine had a poll on who was the best man throughout the last 1000 years... this guy won due to a massive voting from the turks:

http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ataturk

I mean...cmon!!! Very Happy

Lol! Very Happy There's patriotism and then there's blind nationalism. But the imdb or any other open voting systems are vulnerable to exploits so what can be done? I mean we all made that silly song MTV's best act ever by sheer numbers voting for it regardless whether it deserved it or not. IMDB says that their super-secret formula takes extreme (10 or 1) votes into account but it doesn't seem to be working.

Look at that Euro Crap Festival. Apart from the fact that almost all the acts are cheesy pieces of shit, the skewed voting by 'certain countries' is like a shit cherry on top of a shit-cake. Razz

Who said they arent good? But Im pretty sure its turks only who have voted it to the top 20 list and thats pretty much what this thread is about. Just like the voted the founder of Turkey to be the man of the millenium.

So please, stop the crap already Smile

My point is: You should tell me that its my fault for just watching american movies when your absolutely wrong. You assume too much.

Well there are 300 million Americans that only watch american movies and only vote for them so I think that's an even bigger problem, not sure why pick on the Turks there are 80 million of them and they have less internet.

You don't see anyone bitching about the top250 list, 'infested' with Hollywood movies. It's inevitable with an international board, people will vote according to their taste.

As for Ataturk being chosen as man of the millenium, why would a Turk not vote for the man who pretty much singlehandedly saved Turkey from being a collection of seperated states? Americans will vote for their hero, British for their own and Turks for theirs. And not to mention there are probably alot more Americans on this planet than Turks, so blame them for not voting.

PS. all of the Turkish movies on that list are Turkish classics. Doesn't mean anything if they're not English and/or not made by Hollywood.

omg Rolling Eyes

First of all, I never said the movies are shit. But how many non-turks do you belive have watched them or will watch them?

Secondly Mister_s - that guy might be a hero to the turks. But you seem to miss the point, there was some incredible gatherup by the turks just go get him to become concidered the man of the millenium. Had it been the Turk of the millenium, I think it would have been ok

Oh and Mister_s - get your fucking facts straigth. This is not a fucking bitching about the top 20 movies. Its just a bloody thread about how suprised I got and a simple question which you so far have manage to totally miss Rolling Eyes

Oh, and madmax17 - feel free to show me where I said the movies sucked.

Jeeezz...some people just don't get it Rolling Eyes You just can't answer a simple question without starting to bitch. Imo make a thread in the bitching section if this bother you so much.

Doesn't your first post suggest that you believe those movies shouldn't be there? Doesn't that mean you believe those movies aren't 'worthy', which means they're not good?
And what does it matter if the Turks had a gatherup for that crappy election? It probably used internet and sms, so everyone will cheat. It's as reliable as the European Song festival.

Your posts suggest you're disagreeing with that IMDB list and the millenium election. I'm just pointing out those two things mean shit. No you're not saying those movies are crap, you're hinting at it. Would it be better if those movies were made in the USA?

The millenium election is something I disagre with - the imdb is another question.

Im not fucking hinting at anything you stupid cunt. Dont make your fucking asumptions all the time.

You're bringing up the millenium election thing, I react to it. You're pointing out that the IMDB list consist of movies you've never heard of, I'm pointing out it's inevtiable with an international site/board and not all movies on there can be English. All of my posts 'respect the thread' (whatever teh fuck that may mean).

No, i mentioned it quickly. Your post doesnt "respect the thread" as I still havent seen you answer the simple question at the first post. So don't give me that crap mate.
AND your seem to be totally unable to see that in the first post I just point out that "atleast I havent heard of them" so thats why I ask if anyone here (non turkish) have. Its a plain and simple question. Also, you missed the post where I said that I personally dont just watch American movies. Far from it (I mentioned that my dvd collection has just as many non-american ones).

notice anything Wink

if they were actually well known movies, turkish or otherwise, they wouldn't have such a small # of votes. What you have is a very skewed voting demographic in love with their own movies.

Guess I misunderstood you then. As for non-Turks seeing those Turkish movies, since none of them were translated as far as I know of, it's doubtfull anyone not skilled in Turkish has ever seen them. The movies are also pretty old, so a translation will probably never be available.
It is surprising though that those movies weren't pushed lower by recent movies. I never knew so many Turks voted on IMDB. Or there's something wrong with the rating system obviously.

Edit: Obviously there's something wrong with the system.

it's weird too because every other 'top genre' category has a wide mix of american and international films from all decades, each with several thousand votes.

Just noticed this myself looking for some good comedy over at IMDB (actually did a thread about it, did not see this thread until now, so deleted)

And yea looks like they should see over their site a bit better Smile.
