I'm interested in compression. Is it better than winrar or same?

I've not tried it yet, though I've heard it's meant to be CONSIDERABLY better (upto and including 40% in some cases)
I'll give it a try with a few things.

The only reason why I still keep both (as opposed to only 7Zip) is the butt-ugly interface of 7Zip... The moment a new interface is put, I will move to 7Zip completely.

worked for me
EDIT: right, 7zip cant archive rar and winrar .7z...
edit2: both extract .rar at same speed for me, 10s here and there
and about gui: it's not like you're gonna jerk off on the interface.. i'd like my things to look as minimalist-dirty as possible
yes

7zip looks great, and I would have changed to it by now if it wasn't for the fact that it doesn't support creating rar archives.
When I create a rar archive it's pretty much guaranteed that the other party can extract it. 7zip archives, not so at all.

Yeah, I was surprised that 7zip didn't support RAR. Luckily though, latest versions of WinRAR *can* extract from 7zip.

they can extract, but they can't ARCHIVE both each others' format.
RAR is proprietary
7z is under lesser general public license - meaning it's free but only author can modify its source
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7z#Limitations
Quote: | Unlike WinRAR, 7z cannot extract "broken files" - that is (for example) if one has the first segment of a series of 7z files, 7z cannot give you the start of the files within the archive - it must wait until ALL segments are downloaded. WinZip has the same limitation. |

should be mentioned that compression ratios are very dependant on materials.. winrar is still a bit better on much of binary data
especially annoying when 7zip takes decades longer compressing and ends up with a larger file anyway

You should try the free multi-archiver Peazip :

P.S.: And WinRar still has a really nice compression-to-speed ratio.
