I recently started digging into Backtrack, a linux distribution specially created for penetration testing. you can download an image with backtrack here: http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html the image is a linix live cd, so you can use the cd to boot into linux to play around with it, with no risk of harming your computer. There are some great tutrorials on the internet for backtrack: http://n00bhacker.blogspot.com/2008/01/putting-your-card-into-monitor-mode.html
