My good old video card is dying :/
Today after less than a minute in World of Goo, my computer crashed and I had to reset it.
When it rebooted I was horrified by the sight of nasty artifacts showing all over dark colors.
I tried rebooting, installing new drivers, cleaning the video card out of dust... but all of my desperate actions turned out to be futile.

So I guess it's now official my good old X800XL is soon to be dead.
Now I need to waste my money on a new video card that I don't really need :'(
Maybe I will even have to upgarde my old PSU Crying or Very sad

Actually you do. Laughing

An X800 doesn't cut it anymore!

EDIT: LoL, nvm now I see what you're talking about. Thought it was just image compression causing that. Laughing

Well if you guys can see it, it can't be the monitor.

KrAzY-KaMeL - Yeah lol, I know it's old. But I don't game that much anymore, and if I do then I play on my brother's computer which is much better than this one.

I've been looking around now for new video cards and I don't know what to take yet. I'll be happy to get some advices about decent ones that are not too expensive. I also need them to work with my pretty old system.

This is my system -

AMD 3000+ S939
MSI Neo 4 Nforce 4-F (PCI-E v01.00)
PQI 512X2 Cas2 2-3-3-6 400Mhz
PowerColor X800XL VIVO Dual DVI
WesternDigital 160GB S-ATA 8Mb Cache
Hitach DeskStar 320GB ATA
Maxtor 30GB (Linux)
PSU - Antec 350SL
RaidMax Cobra Black
NEC 3520A DVD Burner
Monitor - ChiMei 222H

There are some dirt cheap cards that are 4x as fast as yours. But before that I'd try swapping another video card in there just to make sure it's the culprit.

Yeah, but I don't think I got any card I can find around here to swap with this one. The only one I can think of is my brother's 8800GT but it's PCI-E 2 and I don't know if my PSU will be able to handle it.

Lutz - LOL. It can get a bit confusing sometimes Razz

There's only one way to find out if it will handle it, put it in! 8800GTX's squeal loudly when they aren't being fed enough juice but I'm not sure if 8800GT's do so. All I'm saying is don't embark on the new graphics card journey if you don't need to. Especially since you sound pretty upset about having to fork over money.

Yeah well eventually I tried out a friend's 6600GT, but when I put that in I couldn't go through the boot of Windows or Ubuntu (tried them both) however I could get into the BIOS.
I also tried Ubuntu on my X800XL and it had the same artifacts problem.

meh.. I'm thinking about maybe buying a whole new system and end with it.
If I buy a new video card, my current system will probably be a major bottle neck on it, and I would probably have to buy a new PSU as well.

Maybe I'll be better off with paying $700 and end with it and a new system.
I also notice now that sometimes my system freezes for a few seconds when I browse in some 'heavy' flash websites and sometimes to the point where my monitor turns off saying it gets no signal, and then it gets back on.

Maybe tomorrow I'll try my brother's card.

Edit:
I think about it now, and maybe it's not the video card at all. I get all these weird hiccups when playing music in WMP too.
Maybe it's the PSU? Sometimes when a PSU is dying all kinds of weird problems occur. Maybe that's why my friend's 6600GT didn't work? Does it consume more power by any chance? Well I'll try to find another PSU too. Too bad I don't have much time for all of that hassle. :/

No a 6600GT should consume less power than a X800. Yeah definitely try the power supply, they sometimes cause all kinds of odd issues.

@X

dont feel bad man, I just spent 1000 bucks (well like 900 something) on a card and a psu.
Better to upgrade if you can afford it than to be stuck with malfunctioning/shitty gear.

one could always swallow it.
someone willing to do that would be needed, but anyway. i'm just saying that there's ways of getting around this, without clean up material, ya know? Wink
