Decided to skip the first gen of Nehalem "1366" and stick with my Rampage Formula board "775".

Have a E8500 at the mo @4GHz. But i am thinking to get a Quad. Hoping they will drop a bit in price when the new Nehalem's comes out in a few weeks.

Question is which one to get that can OC well?.
I would not go for a Extreme but.

But thinking one of these maybe

Intel Core2 Quad Q9550 4x2.83GHz
or
Intel Core2 Quad Q9650 4x3.0GHz

Anyone have experience OCing those, and where would one hit the ceiling with them.

Just checked the price on
Intel Core i7 940 4x2.93GHz 699,99 €
WOW Laughing
Not out for another four weeks but (on the German site i checked)

Yeah I'm doing the same thing, got a Q9450 Smile
It's also best to wait for later revisions of the new motherboards.

My bro has his 9550 at 3.6Ghz with the vcore bumped to 1.275 but it was putting out a ton of heat so he opted to go with another cooling solution. Most people seem to be able to hit at least 3.4-3.6Ghz on air easily.

I don't see the need to push them any farther than that though.

I'd say wait. The E8500 is still perfectly fine. Nothing uses quad core anyways. So basically, wait until the current LGA775 quad-cores become shit cheap like a half year from now.

As Mchart already said, your dual core cpu @ 4000 Mhz outperforms a quadcore (which is nearly impossible to oc to 4 Ghz on air) in 99% of all things you most likely do.

It`s simple: When you don`t have an idea why you`d need a quadcore - you don`t need a quadcore.

I bet your rig is even way faster than the nehalems when they hit the market.

Cheers AwE. Your comments are always taken with gratitude here. I feel a bit calmer now Smile. I guess I will save my money and go for that 30" Dell instead.

Read some reviews and the i7 cpus seem to be significantly faster than the yorkfield quad-cores. The difference is more obvious in cpu-intensive tasks than in games though.

Would be sad if their would be NO huge difference.
But for Games it`s useless.
I`m impatiently waiting for first user benchmarks. I bet a Nehalem at stock won`t beat any core2duo@4GHz.

If you look at the realworld benchmarks that doesn`t highly profit from multicore support even a 8400@stock comes close.

At least it`s absolutely not cost efficient if you don`t use your rig mainly for multicore optimized tasks.

And look at their game benchmarks:
1680x1050 - I mean cmon.... pffffff....
and: I7 at 3.84 Ghz but no overclocked core2duo benchmarks?!

But what would you expect from Toms Hardware...

very interesting, thx for the link.

Looks like the i7 will stomp the core2duo IF gpu is not bottlenecking.
Now make that benchmarks with a core2duo @ 4 Ghz and I am happy.

Man the quad processor prices have jumped quite a bit in the last week or so... Hope the vendors have stocked loads of stuff in hopes of christmas sales, and now with the economy scare won't sell them all and have to dump them at sale prices in january. Very Happy

Pretty reassuring gaming test, i7 vs E8500

Check page 2

For those of you out there still gaming on a dual core CPU, I would suggest making sure you check out page two of this article if you are thinking of investing in a Core i7 for gaming. Our E8500 solidly held its own in FarCry 2 gaming at 1600x1200 resolution and above.

Suits me fine, will be gaming at 2560x1600 in a week or two, will have my Dell 3008WFP by then Wink.

First User Benchmarks are available...
and - surprise - the I7 is a waste of money right now for gamers. especially if your are playing in high resolutions.

Well - if you have 2 x 4870x2 or 3 x gtx280, get one now! Laughing
1000€ for a new system + GPUs Rolling Eyes

Good idea would be to wait for the next generation of gpus, and then upgrade. Single GPU Users wont have a noticable benefit in Gaming Performance for another year or so....

If you like the smell of fresh Hardware and love to twiddle *winkwink* - I7 is for you oc
