My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA P35-DS3R, with an onboard soundcard, the Realtek ALC889A HD audio.

Just now, the soundcard just disappeared from my system. Didn't do anything. It just disappeared. Doesn't show up in the Device manager, it's not there. Tried rebooting ofcourse, nothing.

Windows sound manager just says "No audio devices installed". Im on Vista btw.

How the fuck does this happen?

In your BIOS options (Integrated Peripherals), is the Azalia codec set to Auto? In Device Manager, does scanning for new hardware detect the onboard chip? Under Sound, video and game controllers, when functioning it should show both High Definition Audio Device and Realtek High Definition Audio. What does yours show?

Did you have the latest R2.07 Realtek drivers installed?

I already checked the BIOS, and it was set to Auto.
Scanning for hardware gives nothing.
Device Manager doesn't even have a Sound, video and game controllers-section.

I did have the latest drivers.

This is weird as fuck i tell you..

Well i managed to fix it. Used RegistryFix first, didnt fix it. Used Driver Cleaner to remove everything, didn't help, since windows wouldnt even detect the card. So i removed the battery from the mobo for 1 min, put it back, and now it works.

Wow that's as close as it gets to hardware failure. Laughing

If that shit happens again I'd be investing in a new SoundCard.

What would you recommend? Im honestly totally lost when it comes to soundcards. Been thinking of upgrading before, but i really think it sounds good with what i have now.. Then again, since i dont have another card, i dont have anything to compare with Razz

Just stick with the onboard sound. I doubt that will happen again. Onboard sound is pretty darn good this day of age - Unless you have some piece of shit old mobo with AC97 sound.

Even an Audigy SE will make a huge difference from the onboard sound.

No, it won't. If the onboard sound follows the updated HDAudio codec scheme - You would be hard pressed to notice the difference between that and any sound blaster product. Onboard sound isn't shitty anymore.

I had that mainboard along with EP45/MSI P35 Neo2 FR/P45 Neo3 and all sounded worse (noticeablly) than an SB Audigy SE/Xtreme Music.
I don't say the Audigy SE is an uber card but it's the best bang for the buck (less than 30$) way better than the onboard sound.

PS. By onboard I reffer to Realtek's ALC888 HD. The mainboards above are just the ones I already tested.

I agree. The difference between onboard audio and a dedicated sound card is substantial (Even if you aren't a sound anal) given you have the speakers to take advantage of the hardware. I don't care how manufactureres label their motherboards audio, HD or not they don't compare with the right speaker setup.

Onboard audio isn't shitty anymore but it's now decent.

Seems like there's mostly problems with running a Creative soundcard in Vista anyway. The search continues..

You can use/download free drivers from their site too. No Vista problems. And you can also try DanielK's drivers.
Xtreme Music is inferior to Xonar D2 but also 3 times cheaper.

I've the same motherboard as _SiN_ and the on-board sounds really good. Decided not to stick my old audigy in as when I did some google research it was more in favour of the on-board 889. Might give it a go reading the comments above. Very pleased with the 889 tho.

If it's working now mate I'd just leave it.
