I'd have to say the GTX260 Core 216 is probably the best bet as of right now. It's around $280, performs a lot better then the normal GTX260 - And basically is on par with the GTX280 (Which costs a shitload more).

So the GTX280 is the best of the best and is Nvidia?

Yes, but it isn't worth the money considering one could spend nearly $150 less and get the GTX260 Core 216 which performs nearly as good.

Yeah, the 280GTX is the fastest single card solution right now. I personally consider it the fastest card on the market period as the 4870X2 is a heap of shit. Laughing

But if you want a nice compromise go with Mchart's suggestion.

What resolution do you play at?

I dont mind spending the extra 100-150 tho man. Especially if its top of the line. Plus Im not buying it Smile

My dad said he'd buy me a xmas gift this year, anything under 1000 bucks. so 400 is cool ya know?

I'm quite happy with the two heaps of shit in my system. One 4870X2 outperforms the 280GTX in anything but crysis. Which has also been optimized for Nvidia in such a way that it detects if you have Nvidia and you choose 8xAA you get 4xAA boxed, and if you have an Ati card and you choose 8xAA you get 8xAA boxed.

Even the "puny" 4870 is a beast. Brilliant value for money imo.

4870X2 has my vote. No point in buying a 260/280 GTX.

I have a 4850 that i paid 99 pounds for, everything I've thrown at it minus far cry 2 its runs flawlessly.
The only reason no doubt it won't run everything maxed is because i have an older 4400x2 processor but im happy, I've had this system for over a year n half minus the gfx card , and everything plays top quality at the 1680x1050 resolution i play me games at Smile
Plus the 4870 is supposed to be alot faster then my card but for a fraction more.
I'd go for the single 4870 personally, they'd run everything great.
Looking again the prices have shoot up due to the economy I've been told off another site so the 4870 is near 200 pounds and my 4850 is nearer the 130-40 pound mark Sad

I disagree having played games with both. (And technically owning both Laughing )

If you take both the 4850 and 4870, reduce the 4870's core to 625Mhz which is what the 4850 runs the difference between them is 5-7%. The memory bandwidth doesn't offer that big a performance gain, it's the 125Mhz faster core speed although the GDDR5 does help in certain >1920x1200 situations.

But if breaking the bank isn't a choice right now I'd suggest the 4870/260 refresh. Both are cheap and honestly nothing is taxing enough to warrant more unless you play on a 30' screen.

I play on a 37" 1920x1080 screen with dual 3870s... I need to upgrade soon, I've had these 2 cards nearly a year now Sad
