So there's not gunna be a season 6 of SGA. They are scrapping the series and are starting a new one called Stargte Universe.
The premise is the ancients sent two ships to some galaxy to do some research or something but they ascended and left the ships and research intact.
The SGC finds them and a new show is born
I got this from watching a show on the Space Channel called The Circut. David Hewlitt, Joe Flanigan and a few others basically were saying their goodbyes.
I dont see why they cant continue with both SGA and Stargate Universe.
And I dont see how they are gunna wrap up the conflicts in SGA in the last few episodes remaining.
The maker of Stargate did say tho the SGA people are gunna be making a bunch of straight to dvd movies to continue the story. Still, i'd rather have a weekly atlantis tv show than 5 or 6 movies.
Anyway, just thought i'd let the rest of you who like SGA know. Maybe one of you resourceful people can find some info about this on the net.
EDIT
Here's a little bit of info i found on it. Nothing as current as what I saw on the tv show tho

had heard rumblings about a new Stargate TV series to replace the departed Stargate: SG1 and the aging Stargate: Atlantis, but that was a while ago. Now, Gateworld has new details about the upcoming series, to be called “Stargate: Universe”, and as the name may already hint at, the series will be set onboard a ship built by the Ancients. According to Stargate producer Brad Wright, who conceived of the third series with co-producer Robert C. Cooper, the ship was an experiment by the Ancients many years ago, but was abandoned after they ascended. Now it’s up to the Stargate team to finish the job.
More:
“The idea of Stargate Universe is that it is set on a ship that was part of an Ancient experiment that was set in motion probably millions of years ago — one that they never saw to fruition, but that we can,” Wright told GateWorld exclusively. “They got busy with the whole ascension thing.”
The experiment is “to send a ship across the universe, and to send one ahead of it to seed the galaxies with Stargates, and that they would one day use the ninth chevron to get there [to the ship]. And that’s what Stargate Universe is.”
That doesn’t explain it? Here’s more:
Millions of years ago (before their conflict with the Wraith and possibly even before they moved Atlantis to the Pegasus Galaxy), the show would reveal, the Ancients sent out two ships: an automated vessel to place Stargates throughout multiple galaxies in our universe, and a second ship to follow up and explore.
A standard, 7-symbol gate address allows for travel within the same galaxy. Use of the Stargate’s eighth chevron allows for travel to a different galaxy. And the ninth chevron will allow the team to reach this second, still unmanned Ancient ship.
I can dig it. After its cancellation, I sort of miss Stargate: SG1 now. A new series — perhaps with the same cast? — would just rule. |

Here's some info for the Stargate Website
Quote: |
New York, NY - August 22, 2008 - SCI FI Channel and MGM Television Entertainment have reached an agreement to extend MGM's Stargate brand with a new series for the Channel. Production on the first season of Stargate Universe, a weekly series based on the popular Stargate franchise, will begin in early 2009, with the show targeted to premiere that Summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and who both currently serve as executive producers on Atlantis, will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.
"SCI FI has enjoyed tremendous success with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis and we're proud to be the home of the new Stargate Universe," said Mark Stern, Executive Vice President, Original Programming for SCI FI & Co-Head Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. "Universe will continue the Stargate legacy of vibrant storylines and compelling adventures, but will re-invent the format in a whole new way."
"The Stargate franchise enjoys a loyal and substantial fan base that welcomes each new installment with fevered enthusiasm," said Charles Cohen, Senior Executive Vice President and Corporate Development for MGM. "We are delighted to be working again with Brad and Robert and look forward to seeing new adventures with the launch of Stargate Universe on SCI FI Channel next year. Stargate Universe will continue the longstanding relationship between MGM's stellar science fiction franchise and cable's premiere destination for all passionate science fiction fans."
Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President Programming & Original Movies said, "Stargate Universe is a natural progression for the Stargate brand and for our network. Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis have been key drivers for SCI FI and we are looking forward to seeing where this next chapter leads, as each new installment of the Stargate franchise further engages the SCI FI audience."
Wright and Cooper said: "In 'Universe,' we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humour, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping off point for telling stories."
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.
What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.
The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.
Stargate Universe will debut as a two-hour movie event on SCI FI. Following its premiere, Universe will assume a regular hourly slot in Summer 2009. |

Better to put the show out of its misery because it's been dragging quite a bit since they have run out of bad guys. And I wish they would hire real story-writers and not tv execs who fancy themselves to be writers. I think the franchise has run out of steam and the new show will have to overcome huge odds. Fans don't take to new characters/teams so easily.

The plot had gotten so thin that they had to use all sorts of non-related filler episodes to flesh out a season and when they picked up the story again the audience had lost track of it. Those recaps at the beginning of each episode were getting longer to get people up to speed again.

hmm, read all the post and i see there are a few people here that do like a good movie/tv show. i mean, tell me another SCI-Fi tv serie with a story as complex as SG-1 had. Atlantis story is good (not as good as SG1 but good enough) and i really liked it. it was something new, different than anything i ever saw. and trust me, i watch 90% of my time only sci-fi tv shows. Sci-Fi channel is dumb for canceling SGA. the show was going on the right way this season.
@dominae: you might think it's a shitty serie but it's not. you just didn't manage to understand the SG series well enough (i was like you till a few years ago... hated the SG show, now it's my favourite). you say they should spend their moneys on a real Sci-Fi..... do you have an idea on what?? a new Star Trek (hmmmm)? or maybe you would like to see a Star Wars show.... seriously, i doubt anyone would like that . or maybe they should continue investing money in Terminator show....

SGA is decent, but nothing near SG1 quality. The show got boring really, I'm not surprised it's getting canned.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and especially Babylon 5 beat the shit out of both SG series story arc wise. So, I guess in order to match those shows' awesomeness, they need to make a Stargate series based on a space station, and have a number at the end of the series name. |
viewed both of them. B5 was my favorite before SG and i know it's story and it is not as good SGs story. for example, a Shadow or Vorlon ship was a lot more powerfull than a human or Minbari cruiser. if you have seen the show, then you know a Shadow cruiser can destroy with 1 shot a Narn cruiser (and they were as powerfull as a centaury cruiser) or a human cruiser (you can see that in Crusade show if i remember correct -> it's a memory of the Excaliburs captain dating several years ealier to his approval of Excaliburs captain and possible before or in the same time with the events of B5). the young races had no chance of success against the might of the Shadows. the only one capable of fighting them were the Vorlons. and don't mention the Minbari cos they were not a treat for the Shadows not even during their last war (they only won thanks to B4 station)
in SG-1 and SGA, Earth cruisers have a chance against Goa'uld ships. and in the end they are powerfull enough to fight and win against an Ori cruiser and also against the Wraith. so i think this says a lot about how real the things are and why SG is better than B5 or Star trek DS9.
and if you think that is not enough, SG offers an explanation of why there are humans all over the galaxy and beyond. so far, no Star Trek, B5 or any other show i've seen no one says how come everyone looks very similar to humans, why everyone has 2 arms, 2 legs and so on. i'd say that offers a good explanation why SG story is better than the 2 shows above

BSG Story > SG Story
In sg universe You get loads of complex story, bullshit story. In BSG story isn't as complex but it grabs and holds Your balls till the end.
And before I get called SG hater, I watched entire SG-1 from beggining as it first appeared 11 years ago, and followed every episode of it. And I'm still highly sentimental about it.

@swingman: interesting thing on Wiki but from what i read there that only happens in one episode. in SG-1 (mainly) the story is not told by someone but the team is trying to explain how come there are humans all over the galaxy. the same thing happens in SGA. and i'd say that counts a lot.

i kinda disagree with you. i saw the old BSG and almost 3 complete seasons from the new BSG. and i can't say it grabbed me. good story, nice effects, nice space battles and so on, but i can't see it competing with SG. but anyway, it's my opinion only.
and don't worry, no one will call you an SG hatter

@Spiderman: you got that right. one more thing .... what is CGI ?
anyway, let's stay on topic . i think it's a bad move to cancel SGA and start SGU. i like the idea of SGU but i have also read a bit of fan-made texts and i can say i like more their version of a new SG than what the producers want.

You say that as if it wasn't made to be readily available to everyone. It's a simple space soap. It's meant to be humorous and entertaining with some moments of "Oh no, Daniel dies again!". I don't need to see the SG-1 series again to confirm that.

1:it's shitty why? explain. tell me something another movie has/had and SG doesn't. it has a very good story, very well explained, it has action based both on planets & later in space, it offers an idea like i've never seen before: we are out there. we, the people from earth from our days, not from the year 2500+, and it shows what we might be able to do with out limited tech (compared to other races; ex: Goa'uld not to mention other more advanced races)
2: it was made available for everyone. i didn't want to offend you with that phrase but you simply did not tried to understand the hole picture of SG. and probably the biggest thing about is, like i said above, the fact that it's us out there not our childrens children
3: i kinda doubt someone will try continuing that serie but it's let's say a good .

Vorlons did help the minbari in creating the new fleet for the shadow war - kinda like Asgard helped humans with their ships, eh? They're both scifi shows and we all know how they sometimes bend even the scifi show version of logic in order to create exciting episodes, so it's pointless to argue how one show is more realistic than the other.
And like you said, B4 turned the tide during the earlier war, and it was human-made. Even so I believe it held similar importance that B5 did during the B5 era Shadow War; mainly a place of gathering and organizing of forces. It was minbari vessels that did most of the fighting.
Sajuuk_Khar wrote: |

I don't think this is a requirement for a scifi show, and tbh has nothing to do with the respective story arcs of each show - it's just background info for fleshing out the universes. SG series also have a lot more filler episodes whereas DS9 and especially B5 was primarily about the one story arc. And like swingman already noted TNG does explain this; Now I don't know much about Babylon 5 expanded universe fiction, but since the Vorlons meddled with the younger races genetically, it's possible that them (or some of the other First Ones) were responsible in creating the younger races in their image.
Neither of these things have much to do with the story in the shows -
imo the grand story arcs in B5 and DS9 are just better, more exciting, more interesting and written better than the one in SG series. Plus the character cast in B5/DS9 are better and more likeable - in SG the only good ones were O'Neill and McKay, others were somewhere between passable and annoying.

Actually one episode of TNG takes them out on a DNA hunt which ultimately leads to the discovery of why they all look similar.
That said though i prefer both SG1 and SGA over any ST series.
