Heh. Who would've guessed Will Wright's fears of overhype came true. Next time, try getting more into the original game, and maybe getting one less expansion out.
Although, I still feel that anyone that even remotely liked this original installment will try most, if not all the upcoming expansions.
Still, from what I read, Sims and Sims 2 seemed quite more complete without any expansions installed. Although, seeing how some of them proved quite fun (e.g. for Sims 2, University, Pets, Vacation), I'm putting my hopes on getting some good expansion to get the game as interesting as it originally seemed.
And I know that's a bad thing. Trust me, I know.

it's not bad. i've been playing non-stop (i only stopped because the game locked up on me; a single crash after around 10 hours isn't too bad). i'm at the space stage now. it's vast.
it's too early in for a game of this type and scope for me to give a mini-review. but so far, i like what i have seen. the cellular and creature stage is cool (tribal and civilization stage not so cool). it seems like all the stages leading up to the space stage are extremely short. but this could be because i'm playing at easy difficulty level.
the space stage is by far the grandest of all the stages. i'm almost half way through the space stage. anyway, i'm going back to play again.

Damn the common opinion seems to be of disappointment. Now I'm questioning if I should buy it blindly or pirate it and give it a try first..

Also, i thought I saw someone asking what the heck do you do after you reach max space rank, you must travel to the center of the galaxy.

Reviews have mentioned occasional crashing, so it's unlikely. I have retail version and not crashed once yet mind you.

Game has ran faultlessly. Kids have been playing it a lot with no crashing.

no SINGLE crash there either with the first crack but i'm playing it on OS X though Mind you it's using the PC exe (so the same crack) since it's using Cider (which is basically Cedega for linux users).

I've not crashed playing in one go all the way up to the space stage, which I've barely started.
Game was pretty much as expected, though. Best thing about it is undoubtedly the creature/vehicle creator, but what a disappointment to find out that the units didn't even really use their weapons properly. The rest of the game is ridiculously simple, unimaginative and boring. So much potential wasted.
Hopefully the idea will move over to other strategy games though; designing your own units, from scratch, is definitely a step in the right direction.

That is another thing we simply aren't getting:
The whole social aspect of the game. Wright REALLY pushed that concept. The sharing and creation bit. Personally, I really couldn't care less about it, but its like the seems and its user created content. That stuff made the game.
I get the feeling that spore is not the kind of game for anyone who leans on the hardcore side of the line. In fact, I am pretty sure it will sell millions to those who did not hype for even a second but know the guy who made Sims did it, and play games in 1 hour stretches. Fact is most people on this board can 'finish' a game of spore in a single sitting.
Personally, I thought it was fun. For a bit. But there really isn't that much game here.

Yesterday i quit it because i thought its repetive, strangely today it draws me to spore again, so i guess its a good sign.
One question: does it matter how many weapons of a kind you put on a creature, i.e. if i put 5 of the same level claw on my creature, will its attack be stronger? I mean if i put 5 level 4 claws on it, will its "attack skill" raise or something? Or is it a global value?

You have to invest in the best parts to max out certain stats.

So putting many claws of a kind is purely cosmetical? Sad, because in the first stage it matters how many "stingers" you put on your creature for example. Creating a pure carnivore should allow me to stuff it with claws to max damage and sacrifice other parts like mobility. Why waste DNA for more weapons?
