Maybe it is related to the power supply ?
Maybe the disk doesn't always get the voltage it needs when the mobo boots up ?
Or maybe a newer mobo firmware might help !
It's obviously not a software issue if the drive isn't listed on bootup.

No fancy raid setup or anything like that, just 1 HD with windows and the other 2 HD's being used for storage.
One of my drive's has the habit of dissappearing, no sign or anything - just vanishes and the only way to restore it is a reboot (2/5ths of the time on reboot it still won't be visible).
I suspected a bad SATA cable so I swapped it for a new one and I also tried another SATA port on the mobo and that hasn't fixed the problem either.
I suspected an HD issue so I ran the Win disk checker as well as the Seagate HD disk checker and both came back fine on the drive.
I'm stumped on this one and could use some assistance. |
Are you doing the reboot and checking the BIOS every time? Have you reinstalled windows? Could be a problem with the Windows SATA driver.
If its not listing in the BIOS, its definitely PSU or Mobo issue. Try disconnecting the other storage drive and seeing what happens. If it stops happening, probably PSU

I still recommend trying everything I suggested. If the drive isn't getting enough power its going to do what its doing.
I'll check back here when I wake up to see the status of the other HD being disconnected.

I got an ASUS K8N-E Deluxe mobo.
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.2GHz || Biostar Tpower I45 || GeForce GTX 275 || 4x2Gb OCZ DDR2 Platinum @ 962Mhz

In the BIOS choose "Internal SATA IDE Interface" instead of "Silicon Image Mode" for SATA.

Original Setup:
Silicon Image Mode: SATA Mode
Internal SATA IDE Interface: Enabled
RAID Option ROM: Disabled
I tried disabling Silicon Image Mode but then both drives were not available on boot.
I switched back to original setup and they are both there.
I'm gonna try going with just the 1 HD powered for the time being and see if I can rule out the PSU.

Ok, still got 1 drive unplugged and everything is working fine.
If it can remain working for the next 2-3 days then I think i've found my problem.

So today would be day #4 with one of the HD's unplugged and the drive has yet to dissappear.
Seems like what Phluxed was saying about not getting enough power may be the issue.
My new question is what I can do to remedy this?
This setup with the 3 HD's has never been an issue for me for many years.
My PSU is 420w which has always done the trick.
Any suggestions?

From what I can recall:
1x AMD Athlon 64 3200+
1x floppy drive
2x dvd-rw drives
3x sata HD's
1x soundblaster soundcard
1x nVidia 6800gs video card
1x usb wireless nic
1x dlink ethernet nic
2x case fans
1x led case fan
3x 512mb RAM
I'm not at home but ran the rough numbers and it looked like i needed 320w so perhaps I entered the info incorrectly...

What brand is the PSU you got? Could be a shitty one that can't deliver enough over the 12v or something..
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

Hm, I would not put my money on any PSU that came with ANY case...sorry but that's just my opinion (and probably close to the truth).
They will smack any crap in there to push the price up a tad.

My only question is could the PSU actually be giving out less juice over time (it's been in use for around 3-4 years)?
I haven't added any new components that run off the PSU in a long time and this only became an issue a few weeks ago.

I answered my own question:
"Electrolytic capacitor aging. When used heavily or over an extended period of time (1+ years) a power supply will slowly lose some of its initial wattage capacity. We recommend you add 10-20% if you plan to keep your PSU for more than 1 year, or 20-30% for 24/7 usage and 1+ years."
So I reran the #'s and I came up with 411w (used 30% for Capacitor Aging).
I'm fairly certain at this point it is the PSU so i'll be looking to grab a 465-480w PSU from the store this weekend and give it a try.

I just picked up a brand new 450w PSU and am about to install it and we'll see how that goes.
