Yeah, I'm getting this one as well. But I'm sure someone will be fired for leaking this DVD so early (even before theaters release Laughing).

i really loved the dark steampunk universe and the visuals, but the story is just plain crap
we've seen so many of these dumb monster/zombie films already
if it had stuck to the human conflict, it could have been a proper classic of steampunk cinema

I just thought the entire steampunk thing was ridicilous. How the hell are you supposed to get to mars in a coal powered steam-aircraft? The engines to run it must weigh 100,000 tons..how are they ever going to fly ? Very Happy

it's steampunk
it's irrelevant what it does, everything is possible and done with steam, gears and ropes
just a matter of how high the writer wants to put the bar
hell, verne used a cannon to put a man on the moon, with ridiculous victorian era understanding of interplanetary physics

I'm all for fantasy, but comparing Verne's novels to a movie in the 21st century is not really appropriate, imo. Two different universes.

I guess I just think "steampunk" sucks then. It's stupid and irrelevant Smile

^^ It's just a different visualisation of sci-fi from the usual shiny spaceships, swishy doors and control panels with blinking lights. A stylized re-imagining of the world. You shouldn't be looking for any real science in there. Very Happy

7.5/10

dialogue was silly in places
acting was generally pretty good, sometimes poor
cgi was meh, but i neither expected nor WANTED 100+ million dollars worth of cgi

the reason i give the rating is for style... the film has such an awesome style too it, like everything is gritty and not glossed over... low budget, but they really made every cent count, and it forced them to make the film have a kinda edge too it.. i really enjoyed it.

though the ending didnt make a lick of sense... i dont think much really did to be honest...

evil machine comes to earth, bringing mutants who spread out, attack, kill, bring back people for 'zombification', so that they can continue fucking everyone up on the planet...religious order unites all the people and manages to defeat and seal them in...

heres where it gets hazy.. the humans stole some 'device' from deep in the machine... for no reason other than because it looked shiny i guess... studied it, came to the conclusion that it was a bomb.. lied and said they key to enable it was on the machine, when they would have known full well it was on the sword.. WHY it was even ON the sword, i have no idea.. i guess some monk thought it'd look bitchin...

sooo new war starts, unleashes the mutants again, people go to take this bomb that the mutants apparently created to destroy their own shit, into the heart of the machine to destroy it... holy fuck its the death star all over again, where vader thought itd be a super smart idea to build a tiny vent that could destroy the otherwise invincible bringer of death to the entire universe... did whoever invented the mutant machine create some clever device that could destroy it as well?

i guess the only way all this makes sense is if the humans were idiots, and essentially stole what amounts to a car battery, which when replaced, restarts the ship and sends it on its merry way...

either way, fucking cool movie.

You should know better than to ask 'how things work' in sci-fi because you can be sure there's some fan waiting to answer that question with a hypothesis of his own. That's one thing where star wars was better than star trek, no technobabble. And when they did try to explain how something worked people were like, 'medichlorians? wait.... what?'
