Man killed by lightning at Christie Pits
Jul 08, 2008 11:12 PM

A 28-year-old man has died after he was struck by lightning tonight just before 8 p.m.

Witnesses say the man had sought shelter from the pounding storm under a maple tree at Christie Pits, near Christie and Bloor Sts, when he was struck.

Curtis Puncher was sitting on his porch when he saw the lightning flash in the park. After the rain stopped he went to check the tree he thought had been struck, but instead found the man not breathing and without a pulse.

Puncher performed CPR under the guidance of a 9-1-1 dispatcher until paramedics arrived. The man was taken to Toronto Western Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The man was from Toronto, but not from the Christie Pits area. Police say they are attempting to contact his family, who live outside the city.

An autopsy will be held tomorrow.

Environment Canada recorded 430 lightning flashes during the storm that ripped across the GTA tonight, said Arnold Ashton, a severe weather meteorologist. More than 50 millimetres of water fell before a severe thunderstorm warning was lifted around 9 p.m.

We had 2 thunderstorms in the middle of the night last week. I guess they didn't wake you up. I think one was around 12 or so and the other was 4 am. I am a very light sleeper.

Funny how we change because when I was a kid we used to do crazy rain dances to make it rain. Sure sign of growing older when we begin to find rain a nuisance. Sad

I remember a line from a song. "The rain wasn't cold when i was a boy" or something like that . If you have ever lived where it very rarely rains you would quickly learn how fantastic it is, when it rains there is an instant celebration everything stops & people just go out in the street laughing & crying. We take it for granted. For the most part people are just bitches, they bitch if its wet, they bitch if its dry. Just bitches.

I am from BC so it rains quite a bit here. I like the rain sometimes in the summer, the air is cooler and it cleans the smog outta the air. I love the smell of rain. When it has been pouring for 1 week in a row then I get tired of it.

We usually get long periods without rain here in the summer, but this year not so much.
This is by far the worst summer we've had in a long time.
