I bought like 6 HD4850's today. Bestbuy had 25% off all VisionTek cards so it came out to $150 for the 4850's. I currently have a 8800GTS 512 so I knew I'd be at least even with where I was.

Anyway, some games seem to run worse but what bothers me the most is the image quality difference. I'm talking about AA and AF. I was just playing GRID with the GTS and swapped to the 4850 and even with the exact same in game settings the 4850's 4XAA is noticeably worse.

I'm installing the Hotfix ATi released for their 4800 series and see if it makes a difference.

EDIT: Man this thing blows, Artifacting like crazy in crysis because it runs so ridiculously hot. It's Idling at 78C. But I've heard there is an issue with the fan speed. Disappointing as hell.

At the moment 280GTX and 260GTX are totally useless expect for playing at very high resolutions. 8800GTX/9800GTX can handle every game at 1680x1050 expect for Crysis of course.

catalyst dont have options for the type of AA you want with 4800 series?
ie temporal anti aliasing, adaptive antialiasing etc? maybe you just have vanilla AA enabled in CC so it looks shit?

I had Vanilla AA set for both cards. What I've noticed is Nvidia's AA seems to reduce Jaggies more but blur the edges where AA is applied way too much for my taste. This is most noticeable in GRID.

The ATi card's AA just doesn't eliminate jaggies as much as I would like but at least I don't have to deal with the blur crap.

Also it seems like the card is limited at 16-20% fan speed which explains why everyone is getting ridiculous temps. Driver update is suppose to fix this I suppose.

yea i think the fan is actually stuck at 14% and non os the usual software options for setting how high the fan gets like in atitools aparently work.

the cards should be good over slightly over 105c anyway, 120c = dmg but 105-120c still has a chance and that was back with the x800 series maybe the 4800's can handle temps a bit higher.

i noticed on the asus 1gb model they dont have the stock cooling instead they have like a huge orb style hsf

i think i would feel safer with something like that, once the dust builds up in the stock coolings tunels it will get hot as hell.

Congrats on your 3DMark score. Laughing

Anyway, Nvidia's next gen is a bit disappointing unless we are talking about 30' LCD's where the card is ahead of everything else.

after having the 9800 GX2's for a month I have to say these cards are way better. I'm on a 24" running at 1920x1200. Crysis Very High is amazing with these cards hell I can even throw on some AA and still be playable. But I understand how you can think these cards are not spectacular. I look at it like this. they basicaly took everything they've made up to now in the G92 and doubled the processing power because these cards are a bit better then the 9800 GX2's but only one card as oppose to the 2 in the gx2. on top of that they threw a 512mbit memory controller with 1GB of dedicated video memory as oppose to the split 512 in the GX2's the Min FPS kills on these cards so that you never get this dip in FPS like I would with the 9800's and you can crank out the AA on all you favorite games to date. World in Conflict 1920x1200 with AA16x everything on high and barely a hitch with triple nuke on screen Smile. So yeah there not next gen but it's basicaly double the power without all the fuck ups form the last generation Smile 9/10

Wow! Impressive, most impressive! ATI....cheaper...maybe faster with the 4870X2, I don't care, I am a Nvidia fan and probably always will be. Nvidia will release the 280GX2 and it will rule all. I would be very surprised if the 4870X2 is faster than soon to be release 280GX2. I haven't officially heard about the 280GX2, but you know it's coming. Games are mostly made and optimized for Nvidia cards with the new exclusion of Blizzard, oh well. The GTX280 is only going to get faster with new drivers. I am excited about the GTX260 though. I am praying that it goes for $275/$250 after the price wars are over. Highly anticipating that release this week (Hopefully). I bought a EVGA 9800GTX from a local store. I was so busy I didn't have a chance to open up the box. During that time I was working and reading when I had the chance on the INet. I learned some things and decided to return the 9800GTX. I am glad I did. My 8800GTS 640mb is doing just fine for now at 648/1998. But I know I will break down and buy the GTX260 in a few weeks.

Congrats on the awesome SLI 280 setup! Jealous to say the least! Smile

Forgot to mention this is in 3dmark Vantage.

Just wanted to update on my scores. Was on slizone and someone mentioned to install the PhysX drivers 8.06.12 that enables gpu PhysX and redid my 3dMark vantage and check it out. I did 19000+ on stock 2.66ghz but here is my score with the OC to 3.2ghz

Alright so I upped my FSB to 1600 so im running 3.2ghz on my quad here are the results. FYI I couldn't find a reliable source to download the 177.39 drivers as each copy I downloaded was corrupted.

Nvidia to drop 280 / 260 prices
Quote:
$90 and $30

As of tomorrow, Nvidia plans drop the prices of Geforce GTX 280 and 260. The reason for this sudden price cut is that the cards are not selling as well as Nvidia expected. The second part of the story is that Radeon HD 4870 ended up better than Nvidia had hoped.

Nvidia will cut $90 of the Geforce GTX 280 price-tag, but this is Nvidia's price to partners and we are not sure just how much will this affect the suggested etail price. We are sure that end user prices will also drop but probably a bit less than $90.

The Geforce GTX 260 will be $30 cheaper to partners and Nvidia will only offer limited price protection which means that some partners / distributors and stores might end up with some overpriced cards at their warehouses.

Many people won’t be happy but as of tomorrow GTX 280 and GTX 260 should be cheaper.

SOURCE

Still gonna wait for the R700/4870x2 Wink

that still makes the cards slower and more expensive + sucking more power than their ATI counterparts

@ollax, what Mobo do you have, if you are not planning to run SLI or Crossfire, I would recommend the HD 4870, more bang less bucks compared to any NV card at the mo.

Theres a makeway fix.
Here it is i done it with mine and set it to 70 percernt Smile
Takes 20 odd percent from the heat Smile
if you make a profile in catalyst after turning on Overdrive( make sure clock and memory settings are correct). You can then go to the file "C:\Users\Bretware\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Bretware. XML. the xml file will have the same name as the catalyst profile you saved. right click and hit edit.

<Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
<Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Manual" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="0" />
</Feature>
<Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
<Property name="Want" value="65" />

Change the value to "manual" and Want value to "65"

Save the file then reload your profile in catalyst.

65% seemed perfect for me, 70% was loud but you may need it if your case has poor air flow.

You will have to select the profile everytime you start the computer, but it will work until there is a fix or better info so i can figure how to change the auto target temp.
Good Luck .

Imho better to use rivatuner or similar to gradually and automatically increase the fan speed along with the temperature. Smile
