...of everything being fucked up, and upgrade to phpBB3! It really shouldn't be that much of a hustle if done right.

A bigger hassle than you might think. First of, the forum is completely integrated with the front-page. Sure it looks a simple matter, but not so much.

Then following that there are dozens of little bits and pieces custom stuck into the basecode with a lot of customizations.

The point is that it would take a lot more effort and time than it looks at first glance.

I'm sure of that, as everything related to software, but still, isn't it time to start the leap forward? This is from 04... Sad

Plus, there are lots of custom hacks for phpBB3... Can't they be used instead of the ones you use now?

i upgraded some phpBB2 forums to phpBB3 and believe me, lots sh*t can happen.

I was upgrading it using the 'auto' upgrade function and it went ok, then i had to upgrade to a newer php3 version, which went wrong. It crashed, DB fucked up. Then i used the 'fix db' thing, fucked up again. Then i wanted to restore the old DB, but the new phpBB was updating the 'backup' DB in the update as well.

Result: phpBB2 fucked up, phpBB3 fucked up, DB fucked up. 2 weeks manual labor to get everything back to the old working stuff... There is no need to adopt new software. Just wait until a lot of guineapigs have tested it until it is 110% stable and auto-updatable. And btw, why change a winning team anyway?

Well, the smart thing to do would have been to make a snapshot of the DB and PHP code and work on that. Then, when you single most of the problems out, then do the process on the main DB.

I don't know, everything feels so outdated when compared to other forums... It could be the look alone, but I think feature-wise has much to do with it as well.

What does it matter if the software isn't the most recent if it serves the purpose required of it ? What is missing, apart from the stigma of using the newest software ? In my experience, sticking with a system your familiar with makes for easier maintenance. Like spankie said, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

http://www.phpbb.com/about/features/ Laughing

Again, I can't pinpoint exact thing, just feels very outdated. Same can be said for Windows 3.11, it did the job, so why move to XP/Vista? Razz

And from my time admining phpBB3, I was surprised how easy it was to manage. Never had such easy time installing and running a forum.

Definitely more pros than cons imo... So when are we upgrading? Laughing

im sure phpbb3 flags unread topics and posts way better than this one. I notice often, that it sends me to a post i read minutes ago, so i have to swith the page... manually - fuck that Laughing.
While posting usage of bbcodes would be more to my pleasure, but other than that, i dont see something missing...
phpbb3 supports forums in forums out of the box... but it doesnt seem we need (or you want= that here.

There really isn't anything wrong with this board. There are a few bugs which Rinze can personally fix but what's so awesome about this board is the fact it's simple and not flashy. It's straight to the point, doesn't have a crap load of junk wasting time.

What features could make this board any better than it is? The most I could see would only affect rinze, mrt and any of the other board runners and that would be security issues which im sure phpbb still gives updates for this version otherwise, as high a profile this forum is, would be hacked unto oblivion.

You could say this board is successful for the same reason maddox's and google's pages are. They are plain, simple, and to the point.
