So some pastor wants to shove his bullshit down our kids throats in the UK. Well as far as I'm concerned he can turn around and take his ring elsewhere. Personally I hope my daughter when she decides to have or to refuse sex goes on informed choices with no religion involved. Rather than some crappy piece of jewelry and a false promise based upon the ramblings of some religious wanker. A wanker that wants to shove his religious rethoric down impressionable young kids.
Looking on their site ( www.silverringthing.com ) why would they be selling products other than to make a tidy profit. I see this scum as no different from any other religious cult. Something I'm vehemently against.

The ring is a reminder of the pledge
American teenagers are doing it - taking public pledges to abstain from sex until marriage.
It's a stance embraced by 2.5 million young people in the United States in the past decade, championed by Miss America and (until her confessions to the contrary) pop temptress Britney Spears.
And now the message has come to the UK, where teenage pregnancy rates are the highest in Europe (but still below the US). Denny Pattyn, the founder of the faith-based abstinence group Silver Ring Thing, is touring the UK and Ireland in the hope of persuading young people on this side of the Atlantic to take the pledge.
"Abstinence is the only way truly to protect yourself against getting a sexually transmitted disease, especially as a teenager," Mr Pattyn says. His group is one of hundreds across the US that promote self-restraint rather than sex education.
But even if a teenager makes the pledge, do they stick to it?
Studies show that abstinence campaigns do delay sexual activity, with pledgers first having sex an average of 18 months later than those who have made no such promise. But when they fall off the wagon - and many do - about a third do not use contraception.

And those who have pledged to remain virgins until marriage have similar rates of sexually transmitted diseases as non-pledgers, according to a six-year study of the sex lives of 12,000 young Americans.
"It's difficult to simultaneously prepare for sex and say you're not going to have sex," said Peter Bearman, of Columbia University, in presenting his findings earlier this year. "The message is really simple: 'Just say no' may work in the short term but doesn't work in the long term."
An earlier study of 12- to 14-year-olds in California for the Alan Guttmacher Institute, a non-profit organisation for reproductive health research, found small changes in their attitudes and intentions three months after abstinence-only classes. But 17 months on, the impact had faded.
Supporters of comprehensive sex education say that as well as being encouraged to delay sex, teenagers should be given information about birth control and protection against disease.
Yet in the US, the abstinence-only movement has expanded from a collection of disparate groups into a centrally-funded drive to tackle unsafe sex, backed to the tune of $270m by the Bush administration.
Such programmes have so far gained little ground in the UK; Sir Liam Donaldson, the chief medical officer, has said there is no evidence that they work. Instead the government's approach is to teach teens about safe sex. Although the rate of teen pregnancies fell 9% from 1998, last year's rate was up on 2002. And statistics on STDs show an increase across the population as a whole.
In Uganda, unlike its African neighbours, the spread of HIV has declined dramatically over the past decade or so. Its success is thought to be down to a three-way shift in sexual behaviour: abstinence, condom use and monogamy. |
BTW the statistics prove this practice is damaging to say the least:
Study of 12,000 aged 12 to 18
Six years on, 99% of non-pledgers had sex before marriage
So too did 88% of pledgers
Pledgers first had sex an average of 18 months later
Both had similar rates of STDs
Pledgers 'much less likely' to use contraception

Personally I don't like the ring idea because it declares to everyone who knows the ring you are waiting or saving yourself. It is a personal decision. Talk about making yourself a 'mark'. If I was a teenager the last thing I would want to hear is about how my mothers best friends daugher is wearing some stupid ring and about what a great person she is. Meanwhile knowing what she was really like.
Best way to avoid preg and VD is education and self esteem.

About shoving religious rhetoric down kids, I would be more concerned about creationism in the UK schools than by these ridiculous -U.S. federal gov funded- evangelical wackos.

I disagree. I hate it when religion is rammed down someones throat, even more so when its impressionable kids. Especially when it's so damaging. This rethoric is wrecking lives. I wonder how many of these kids would have used protection had they not listen to these wankers.

I include the contraception in the education part. Some don't use it because they feel guilty, because using contraception means it was a planned thing.

You see, that's the funny thing. You believe that the parents of these kids are religious wackos and idiots. The parents think the people like you are amoral nuts who will waste away their lives in a cycle of sin. See? Everyone has there own viewpoint on the matter. Who is right? Well, that's up to the individual, and that individual has the right to decide what is best for them and their child. So you see, you can raise your kids any way you like, and they'll raise their kids any way they like. Hence, it's a free country  Yes, it's sad that children get brainwashed and become Jesus-zombies, but that's the price we pay for living in a free country. Now, if everyone had to do it your way, would the country be free anymore? No!
So, in the end it's all one sad dilemma  But like I said, they can do whatever the fuck they want. It's sad, but *shrugs*.

I feel really bad for these kids with such self absorbed and selfish mothers. Are these girls so ignorant that they see no future for themselves except living in proverty as single parents? and they think their little pack of friends are going to be there for each other.

In the end it's the kids of do what they want regardless of their parents will. This proves it.
What parents should teach their children is not their own ideals, but just one ideal - Open your mind. Watch, Listen, and think for yourself. If you have a smart kid and you teach him that, most chances he'll be a lot better than all of these kids that their parents impose their own ideals on them.

I can't believe our teacher made us read that same text last year  We even watched a video where kids talked about why they wore a silver ring, it looked like the director was sitting in front of them with a shotgun or something  I mean, they all talked about how great they felt, yet they didn't show any emotions.
