So, I've acquired myself a brand-new harddrive by Western Digital, and after some weeks of having it is beginning to act weird, for example while I am listening to music it sometimes locks up before resuming, how do I fix this, do I need to defragment my harddrive or something?

edit: I cant even access E: that is located on the hard-drive, but yet I can access F: which is there as well..

chkdsk /r on your hard drive partitions.
Are you using Vista? If yes have you set power options' advanced settings about hard drive?

are your chipset drivers installed?
latest drivers for ide/sata controller?
what os?
is it ide, sata or usb drive?
does it make noises when this happens?
if it makes a hard clicking noise when it locks up, back up your data.. it's usually a sound of disaster looming
and do the check on the partitions as sensi suggested;
chkdsk e: /r/f/x/v
chkdsk f: /r/f/x/v
(takes a loooooooong time)
if there's bad sectors / crc errors, etc, just RMA the drive

Now I got 'The disk in drive E: is not formatted, do you want to format it now?' :l

Doing the chkdsk e: /x/x/x/x thing now, and it seems that there's a lot of bad clusters looming about in my world of warcraft folders, particularly on the itemcaches as well as some .lua files, but yes, there's a ticking sound sometimes when I try to access it, but I will backup stuff if the chkdsk e: thing works out.

RMA it. My Seagate started doing the same kind of stuff, and though CD worked at first it was the beginning of the end. Avoid the hassle and have it replaced.

Reformatted all my harddrives, only moments after the succesful installation of XP SP3 it starts to bug the fuck up again, so I should just get new harddrives then.
Got an ASUS P5KR motherboard if that draws anyones attention, maybe I'll toss it away as well..

more than likely your HD, WD's RMA service is awesome. Just give them a reason why it's fucked, send it in and get a new one in a week or so. Or you can use your CC as collateral and they send you a new one before you send in yours.
