Doesn't seem like anyone has created a topic for IE8 yet? (doesn't surprise me tho' )
Quote: | Microsoft has put in place the preparations for Internet Explorer 8 Beta 1 ready for Mix 08.
A full features page has been revealed which lists the following additions to Internet Explorer:
- Activities
- WebSlices
- Favorites Bar
- Automatic Crash Recovery
- Improved Phishing Filter
Activities allow users to lookup/send information in a right-click contextual menu, such as retrieving an address map from Windows Live Maps, submitting a story to Digg, sharing a page on Facebook etc. WebSlices allows users to crop a specific area section of a site and bookmark it. Improvements have been made to the phishing filter which continues to block known Phishing sites and now blocks sites known to contain malicious software that could harm users’ computer or steal their information.
Perhaps one of the best new features is Automatic Crash Recovery which recovers your tabs if your browser crashes. It is widely expected that Microsoft will release the first beta of Internet Explorer 8 at this years Mix 08 which begins today. |
Read more here (beta1 also available)
- It passes Acid2 test, but now Acid3 is out
- Will be standards compliant by default (to whatever Microsoftian degree that is... I suppose in time quite some CSS flaws will show up, as with IE6 and IE7)
- I've tested the beta for like five minutes on XP on my laptop.
- The UI seems almost identical to IE7, with a few new buttons. Notably a button to emulate IE7.
- Of course the UI might change a lot until it hits final.
- Seems like most of the changes are under the hood on this one.
- I cannot say for sure, but it does seem to render pages faster, which is good.
I will test it more when I have time tomorrow. Even though it's still no Opera or Firefox, I definitively think Microsoft is going in the right direction this time. Only thing I think is lacking is that they should force those horrid IE6 users over to IE7 and finally IE8.
EDIT: Here's a screenie:

Oh yeah
And a note on memory usage:
- Oddly enough there is 4 copies of IE runnings. Probably beta behaviour or something?
- When using one tab on nforce.nl the total of all 4 copies is about 61 MB.
- When using 5 tabs the total of all 4 copies is about 78 MB.
- When using 10 tabs: 97 MB.
My Opera (9.26) uses from 41 MB when I have 7 tabs open. Memory usage varies between 35 MB to around 90 MB.
Not that memory usage of most browsers are important at all in these days and age. Just interesting to note.

I have tried almost all browsers out there (Safari too) and I always go back to Firefox. Each and every time.

FF + Extensions FTW. Opera have the stupid widgets or gadgets or whatever, but it just bloats it and almost none are useful.

never used those besides they are not forced and opera has pretty much everything build-in so u don't need to dLd and update all that crap every time
besides tab browsing is much better and u have more options for it, unlike in ff and it's faster, eats less ram etc

Does IE 8 have a kill switch for Non-Genuine Windows XP users like IE 7 had?

Chrome, FF, Opera, Safari.. are all on top.
Yes, IE8 is definitively an improvement above IE7, but the GUI is still crapola, still lacking in speed and security, not to mention standards! And there's no sweet features like in Opera and FF.

Gosh i almost forgot this. It's like the console war.
No IE is better , No Firefox is better , No Opera is better........... And so on
But at the end it comes up to what people prefer nothing else.

Prefering something that is inferior in terms of speed, security and compatibility is not a wise decision
I go for opera, allthough the extension system in FF is really nice. Widgets are really useless (I've never used anyone, because all of them are just little tools to kill time, nothing productive in there). On the other hand, Opera doesn't need most of the extensions because it has them built-in and working well.
I mean whats the sense in having 3-4 extensions just to have FF trying to be as comfortable as Opera.
