@ ollax

The real nvidia high-end new card is for June as far as i remember. Take one 8800 GTS 512mb or two and save your cash for that date. Smile

Are we even sure yet that there are going to be any "high end" cards like 9800gtx and 9900gtx considering the fact that all they had to show on CES was the 9800GX2 ?

I don't think Nvidia's roadmap has been disclosed. Most of it is speculation. The only concrete fact is that the GX2 card is coming.

If I were you I'd buy whatever is the best Price:Performance and sell it when something bigger and better comes.

The rumored nvidia high-end card is codenamed GT200, with a vague release date of mid-year, nothing sure yet.

well, the 8800GT would actually be a perfect culprit if your not into DX10 games and windows vista. IT'll run DX9 games flawlessly. if you do eVGA you could alwyas just do a step up to a 9 series if it's available to you. Step Up lasts 3 months form date of purchase.

If you´re NOT into DX10 and Vista? Razz

It has run the DX10 games i´ve played with it (on Vista) pretty damn smoothly, at high settings ofcourse Smile

Excluding Crysis ofcourse, no-one can max that out Wink

Make sure you get a couple of really nice screens (at least one with hdcp support) and a top quality keyboard/mouse. At least this way when your computer isn't ultra powerful anymore the fantastic screen etc will make up for it..

Personally I upgraded half my system and deliberately held off on upgrading the graphics while I wait for the real new nvidia as the 8800 tech is over a year old. With your kind of budget this factor would be even more of a concern to me, as the 8800 generation is dropping in price whilst you're looking to spend a bucket-load on the very best..

I wanted to stuff it with about 8 gigs of ram, but that means i would have to run a 64bits os which i have heard has lousy compatibility with most things!

Any suggestions to how i should put this comp together?

That GX2 will be a waste of money, I guarantee it. Wait for the GTX or something.

In all honesty, and I'm one of the biggest Vista haters (yes I've tried it) Vista 64 bit was nice. With a 64bit CPU that OS effin FLEW. The only reasons I changed back was because of 1) The shitty sound API (I couldn't even use my Crative sound blaster control panel, vista locked it out) and the sound was fucking horrible for some reason even with the drivers and 2) I've got a good computer but not the greatest in the world, so I took a performance hit in quite a few games.

But with a higher end computer like lets say Leo has, I don't think that performance hit would have been as noticeable. And with an even higher one your gunna have you shouldn't notice it the slightest.

There are no issues with modern games or applications. As for drivers, haven't had any problems getting 64-bit drivers for any of my hardware.

I really don't see an use for 8GB of ram for most if any usual pc user. Very Happy Be sure that i use applications which makes an extensive use of ram, but 8GB seems just overkill nowadays. As a lot of mobos may degrade your timings with that much ram stuffed in, you may end up with more than half of your ram being unused 99% of the time while the whole is running at an higher latency. Wink

Vista's SuperFetch makes it useful though. It loads frequently accessed files into ram and then gets those files from there when they are needed instead of loading them from the HDD.
The more ram, the more stuff SuperFetch can help with.

but yeah, other than loading times, more ram won't get you an improvement in everyday operation.

Whilst my 8GB timings are 4-4-4-15, I view my increased system memory as a massive reducement in latency that HDD streaming introduces.

As said above, superfetch utilises the additional RAM available and does so very efficiently.

And 8GB for £200, why not? Smile
