Just recently i discovered my AMD Athlon x2 4200+ had 2 missing pins and 1 bent one (the motherboard was in the shop and I didn't know where to store it) so for xmas I asked for a new processor, but don't know which to ask for, the new AMD Phenom 9500 Quad Core 2.2GHz at $382.23 (http://www.nzoczone.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_28&products_id=6089) or the AMD ATHLON64 X2 6400+ BLACK EDITION for $295.74 (http://www.nzoczone.com/product_info.php?cPath=23_28&products_id=45), at first I was sure I wanted the Phenom but after talking to a friend who said it was slow compared to Intel's quad core I was thinking maybe I should go for the 6400+ and wait till AMD get better quad cores out or something,
Thanks for the advice in advance.

Heard a lot of bad shit about the Phenoms. The Black makes more sense financially.

I plan on getting an X2 Black next month, my friend has one and he goes on about how much it's improved his performance all the time. He better be right!

Sweet, thanks, most likely get the x2 Black then, but still wait and see the results of the poll.

I'm a gamer through and through, just too poor for the "Almighty" Intel that everywhere seems so adamant to prove are the best ever.

Q6600 is only $300?
As good as the black edition if not better and it's quad core...

add the cost of new intel mainboard and new compatible to the board ram and you will get the real price

Well I voted for the quad, since I assume you are going to be getting one as a xmas gift and price is not a factor? Because yeah, if deciding by price I'd say go for the one with bigger bang for the buck, which is obviously the dual core black. But hey, if it is a gift, I say the performance is really not that huge a gap, especially when more games start taking advantage of quad, plus the new instruction set.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/11/19/the_spider_weaves_its_web/page27.html

See, not that much a gap in newer games(SC), and you get the extra multitaskability of quad core. Plus of course bragging rights of having quad and the newest chip is always kinda cool, if not really a quantitative mark. So go for that one, like I said if price is not really a factor.

Core i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz | 6GB OCZ DDR3 8-8-8-24 @ 1600mhz | eVga x58 Mobo | 2 x eVga GTX 460 SLI | Intel X25-M + 3x Seagate + WD Black = 2.75TB | X-Fi Titanium | PCP&C Silencer 750 | G15 KB | G5 Mouse | G35 Headset | Z-5500 Digital | Samsung T260HD

Yeah its for xmas, it was a choice of another 4200+ right now or waiting till next month for a better CPU that should last longer then I can just concentrate on getting a worthwhile graphics card, but straight to the point, from the tom's hardware link I think the 6400+ would be what I'm going to get, it got the higher rating on both, the quad falls flat on its face on Serious Sam, but bragging rights is a plus, and even though its for xmas I don't really want to break my parent's bank.

Any other information would be great, your advice so far is greatly appreciated as I don't want to be stuck a piece of crap for a year or so.

guys, I really don`t get it...

Get a cheap intel core2duo - they beat even the fastest amd out there and are NOT expensive...

I built many PCs with the e2180 in the last month, which is dirt cheap, and there wasn`t even one that didn`t do the 3000 Mhz. Most did 3100-3200 easily. 2160/40 should work as well...

gigabyte p35ds3 + e2180 decent cooler + cheap ddr2 800 will cost you about 220 euro(~300$).

I have benched a similar system yesterday:
3dmark06: 12129
CPU Score: 2638

P.S. The card I used was a 8800gt - forgot to mention. but the important score is the cpu score...

Cool, I'll try that out when I build my next PC, this one was originally just to get me started because I really only started making PCs this year and my friend was all AMD this, Thermaltake that, don't like Thermaltake now and AMD are cheaper but Intel are overclock friendly or so I take it so I was planning on making another PC, with Intel and maybe an ASUS Silent Knight and overclock the CPU or something, I'll take your advice into mind AwE for when I finally get a chance at a real PC.

P.S. I say I don't want to go Intel now because my Gigabyte mobo which is AM2 is apparently not broken even though my dad's comp which i nicked is running fine on my Corsair RAM (I was having freezing problems and my teacher from the course I was taking said that it was most likely the Memory Controller or something on the motherboard and therefore need replacing)

lmao what a load of shite! did it start happening after you installed the ram? if so i'd be looking at voltages and timings. Also the 4200+ has the memory controller on the cpu itself..

considering the phenom will be compatible with AM2 i'd go for that, only for that reason..

if you go down the core2duo route make sure it's at least an e4300. I don't think the e2180 mentioned previously is even a c2d chip, rather a core duo..

Well really I think it was after installing my fourth hdd, making it 2 IDE and 2 SATA, but really I've been having trouble with games all the time with this computer e.g. they just spontaniously freeze on my computer while a friend can play them perfectly fine with an inferior PC, on my Gigabyte m55sli (I think thats it) Quake 4 would crash just after the Hannibal was it? took out the towers but on my dads ASUS it works fine, maybe it's just a Gigabyte thing?

P.S. As I said before, I'm not that much of a fan of Thermaltake anymore and I got a new Silverstone 680W SLI PSU to replace the Thermaltake 430W in my Soprano case but it won't fit, all the more reason to hate them.

Glad to hear you've another PSU as that was another likely culprit. Would be good if you were able to leave the case open on it's side with the new psu hooked up to test? leads should be long enough considering it's quality..

Another thing worth mentioning is I had a HDD that simply would not work with the controller on my motherboard, was a known problem, and it would work great on other machines. It would simply make my machine freeze, no BSOD or anything.

I'd also try running memtestx86 overnight..

Dead topic and off topic but I thought it was better to recycle rather than make more trash, E6750 or a Q6600?

EDIT: Making PC for gamer but not serious friend of a friend's brother, not really going to overclock either
