The new 8800 GTS...
There is a lot of different information about it.
Let's start:
Apparently, Nvidia will replace the current 8800 GTS cards in a while with a new one that will have 512 and 1024 MB ram variants. It will be based on the same GPU as the GT, but will have 128 stream processors available to give it better performance than the GT across the board (GT only has 112).
Now in addition to that card, which will supposedly be released some time during the next 2 months or so, Nvidia has already increased the amount of stream processors unlocked on the current generation G80 GeForce 8800 GTS with 640 MB, from 96 to 112.
With a higher memory bandwidth than the GT it is a bit better now on high resolutions where the GT's memory can't keep up anymore.
These cards with 112 stream processor units (SPUs) are available NOW.
The first one to see the light of day seems to be the "EVGA 8800 GTS SSC Edition".
It costs about 280€, so about 30-50€ more than a GT right now.
here is the first benchmark, pitting it against an "EVGA 8800GT Superclocked" which is obviously a stock overclocked 8800 GT.
Now as you can see, the new GTS does well. The difference should be higher at higher resolutions or with AA enabled, where the memory has more to do. Also keep in mind that the GT in this benchmark is overclocked. More benchmarks should show up soon.
This card might actually be worth a thought if you're looking towards buying a new card soon. Before this, the GT was the way to go, but the new GTS is just as appealing.

They are obviously clearing out stock. Same way HD2900 Pro's were speed binned XT's, just preparing for it's EOL.

it was a great card for the price a few months ago.
of course the GT pretty much owns everything out there now, but I don't think anyone saw it coming.

I'm sure if you compared the cards on a lower res it would perform far better.. much like everyone else said.

hehe yeah that could actually work.
Now with the new 8800 GTS and the simply awesome 8800 GT cards.. what the hell is going to happen to the 8800 GTX and Ultra? They totally suck for that price now.
Are they gonna be phased out or will they be replaced with G9x versions like the GTS? Hmmm!
I think I might actually get myself one of these GTS cards with 112 SPUs instead of a GT.
I don't want to pay 450€ for a GTX, and a GT for 225€ would be fine. But if i can get a new GTS-640 for around 250-270€ then that would be ok.
But then... I'm not one of those gamers who needs super high resolutions to be happy. I'm fine with 1280x1024 or even 1024x768, and at those resolutions I doubt the 8800 GTS' memory bandwidth advantage can really be used.
Will have to wait for some more benchies.

Yeah, no doubt GT and the new GTS are much more preferred when it comes to performance/price ratio.

I think people are confused.
There is the current 8800GT which is meant to replace the 320 and CURRENT 640.
There is a new GTS being distributed NOW with 112 Shaders, this is the same as the 640 with the G80 core just more shaders unlocked.
Coming early december is a ACTUAL new GTS which has the full 128 shaders that the GTX has but on a 256/512 memory bus and the new G92 65nm core from the GT. This is theoretically gonna out perform the GTX.
Therefore it's safe to conclude that the CURRENT 112SP 640 GTS are horrible buys given they remain priced where they were and provide a marginal if any performance increase. They are trying hard to rid of all the G80 core GTS's since it is EOL (End of Life)
So when the dust settles that leaves:
???????? ??? (??nm) <- Some new shit
8800GTS 512 (65nm)
8800GTX 768 (90nm)
8800GT 256 (65nm)

GT is 512mb
old GTS is 320 & 640
current GTS is 640 only
new GTS is 512 & 1024
at least that's the current information. could still change.

New information:
Release date of the real updated GTS is supposedly december 3rd.
G92, 128 stream processors and a price of 349$.
In addition to that, there's an 8800 GS incoming which will feature 96 stream processors and slightly lower clocks than the GT. It will also use the G92 GPU. Should offer decent gaming performance for a pretty low price, most likely 150-200$.
Should be close to the old 8800 GTS.

I've actually now heard the GT will drop slightly in price to allow for a price gap on this card and the GS will be even lower than expected. A 'budget' card if you will.

As you can see here, it uses a dual slot cooler instead of a single slot that the GT uses.
A little comparison of specs.
GT first, G92 GTS second.
SPUs: 112 / 128
Core Clock: 600 / 650
Memory Clock: 1800 / 1940
Shader Clock: 1500 / 1625
Those increased specs should give it a decent performance advantage over the GT, and should own the 8800 GTX and Ultra raw performance wise.
I can see the GTX and Ultra still winning in some cases where the 8800 GTS' lower memory bandwidth can't keep up (high resolutions with AA), but on normal resolutions the G92 GTS should be the new king of the hill, considering the GT was already so close to the GTX.
i'm pretty sure I'll get one of these, it's only about 2 weeks away now, and the GT isn't available anywhere. I'll just try to grab a G92 GTS when the first batch arrives.

So how will you be able to tell the difference between the old GTS and the new GTS at stores? By the amount of memory? Just curious, because i am thinking about getting one.

nvidia doesn't give them a new name, but card sellers like XFX, Gigabyte, Asus, etc will probably use slightly changed names to indicate that the card is better.
but yeah, the memory is the best way to tell that it's new. If it's a GTS with 512mb then you can be sure that it's a new one.
Usually when you check out shops, they will list the core or amount of SPUs as well, so they should be easy to find.

should be a global release, just like the GT.
Price is expected to be around 299-349$, so I'd say 299-349€.
It's ridiculous at current exchange rates, but that's just the way it goes in europe.
We usually have to pay the same amount of € that people in the US pay in $, eventhough it should cost us about 30% less. (1€ = 1.45$)

not true, the GT was available pretty much everywhere, but the fact that it probably has the best bang for the buck of any graphics card ever released, everyone went to buy one as soon as they could so it was sold out after only a few days everywhere. now they just can't keep up with the demand.
For the whole last month, the GeForce 8800 GT was the only way to go. Buying any other card was madness. That situation has changed with teh release of the Radeon HD 3870 and 3850, and as soon as the 8800 GTS is out there will be even more great cards to choose from so they should also become available.
