VLC must work. If it doesnt work you have problems with DS. Best player for MKV is MPC(Media player classic).Get COREAVC or FFD show for it.

P.s. I would advise you to stay away from codec packs.

Cheers - I usually don't use codec packs, I just tried one as I had problem with the file. I've been able to watch them before - but that was ages ago.

MPC - http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Media_Player_Classic.htm
Haali Media Splitter - http://haali.cs.msu.ru/mkv/
FFDshow - http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow
Coreavc - http://www.coreavc.com/
VLC - http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

This is everyting you will ever need to play any video file except BR and HDDVD dics. For that you need Power dvd.

I use the K-lite codec pack, never had a problem with it. I sometimes find using CCCP I end up with errors. Then use Media player

Codec packs suck ballz and should generally be avoided (see disclaimer in sig). The often lead to lockups and conflicting codecs, sometimes leading to poor quality and/or poor performance (due to many filters working together). FFDSHOW (and AVC if performance is an issue) should be enough for everything.
