Quote:
Yesterday, Intel unveiled 16 new 45nm processors, along with three new server platforms. In keeping with Intel's typical practice of introducing a new core at the server level and moving it down into the consumer and mobile categories, almost all of the processors are Xeons with frontside bus speeds of either 1333 or 1600. The one exception is the new enthusiast-oriented Core 2 Extreme QX9655, which is a 3GHz quad-core processor with 12MB (4 x 3MB) of L2 cache.

At the top of the launch list is the new quad-core Xeon 5400 series, codenamed "Harpertown," a group of 12 Xeons that range from 2.0 to 3.2 GHz. Lower on the list are three entries in the dual-core Xeon 5200 series, codenamed "Wolfdale." These three parts, which won't be available for another month, run at 1.86, 3.33, and 3.40 GHz, and use 1066, 1333, and 1600MHz frontside bus speeds, respectively.

Finally, as I mentioned above, the Core 2 Extreme QX9650 is now shipping at the very top end of Intel's Core 2 lineup. At $999, the price is indeed extreme, so if you want to have the top dog in enthusiast x86 performance right now, be prepared to shell out.

Speaking of performance, all of these new 45nm processors processors pretty much clobber the competition, as the round of reviews that went out at the end of October indicate. The clockspeed boosts combine with various microarchitectural improvements to give the new Xeons a clear edge in most application domains.

To support its 45nm processors, Intel also launched the three new chipsets, which it describes as follows:

* The Intel 5400 chipset-based platform (previously codenamed "Stoakley") that is optimized for high-bandwidth applications such as high-performance computing (HPC).
* The Intel 5100 Memory Controller Hub chipset and Intel ICH-9R I/O controller (previously codenamed "Cranberry Lake"). These are cost-optimized solutions that support either one or two processors and also provide reduced power consumption using native DDR2 memory.
* The Intel 3200 chipset-based platform (previously codenamed "Garlow") that is specifically designed for single-processor entry servers.

Do people really buy $999 processors? I mean apart from high end workstations who would want to blow that kind of cash on a computer.
