Makes you wonder what took them so long to get this done...
The games are fun, but you get the feeling that they have like a 1 hour working day at Valve...

yeah.. I mean sure.. the engine was enhanced a little bit.
But who needs like quad core support for a game like this... you can play it fine with a 4 year old single core machine so that's kinda redundant.

the graphics are a little bit better too but again, it's not enough to make the game actually look noticably better.

so in the end all we got are a small bunch of new maps. very polished, good maps, but still just maps. I'm sure it could have been done in less than 6 months easily.

they probably just wanted to release everything together as the orange box with TF2 and Portal so who knows, maybe episode 2 could have been finished a year ago.
It's all about the marketing.

Maybe the ports to XBOX 360. But then again, valve might had not been satisfied with the result and went to do some last 'months' changes to the game(s). They did this with HL 1 which was due for release a year before it was actually released. However, their end result is what matters although I have to agree on the various delays and long production periods.

Well, they hit the christmas shopping period, so who can blame them? And if Portal and Hl2-Ep2 were already finished and only waiting for TF2 to be done, perhaps they ll have Ep 3 ready faster, who knows? Very Happy

One can only hope they "secretly" developed Ep3 alongside and will get it done sooner...

Sounds possible that the release was delayed because of the X360 and PS3 versions, to get them out at the same time. But it would still suck big time if we had to wait more than another year to finally get to the end...

They sure didn't spend a lot of time with the X360 version because it looks like the Xbox1 HL2 running on an emulator and the PS3 version isn't even developed by Valve.

That can be, but they still waited until everything was ready... So maybe they already started on Ep3.

The PS3 version still isn't out (due to the greatness of the Cell Processor Wink ), so they did not wait, they are just lazy.

well, as someone else said, the PS3 version isn't developed by valve so they don't really care about that.

I suggest you actually play through Episode2. Then you would know there will be a Episode3. Plus, Valve did say they were making 3 episodes - even though their word doesn't mean much.

In the first commentary to Ep2 they say that there will be 3 episodes, so I think that's reason enough to believe them in this point.
And if they would make an Ep4, it would come out in like 2 years or so. The source engine would not only be dated but stone age then...

When did i say there wont be a episode3? I just meant you're expecting too much if you expect EP2, Portal, TF and EP3 at almost the same time, it's not very realistic...

They are constantly updating the engine and already have a load of special cinematic effects that aren't usable yet. So you'd be wrong, and they wouldn't release it on a stone-age engine even if it was.

the main problem with the episodes system, is the release date of the episodes.

the game was nice and the story is ok and we all used to the characters and 6hours of gameplay will have to wait 1 year for another 6hours to know the rest of the story and it's sucks.

they better release half life 3 from the point where episode 2 ends.

The effects aren't the main problem, it's the textures. Valve seems to only recycle old textures from HL2 instead of creating some new higher-res ones.

I just hate the restricted level sizes. You can tell in the design of some areas the compromises they've had to make to fit the level into the limited space.

97/100 metacritic score so far for orange box. TF2 93, Ep.2 91 and Portal 89. What's odd is user highest score goes to Portal...

that's not odd, portal is just a perfect game. no bugs, looks great, sounds great, very polished. the only bad thing about it is that it's so short, but considering it's kinda like a free minigame coming with episode 2 and team fortress 2 that's really nothing to complain about.

No, that's not the point I was trying to push. The other two games show familiar industry/user ratings but Portal gets the lower industry score from the three and the highest from the users. Wink

oh I see, yeah that is kinda strange. I wonder why.
Maybe the reviewers were too afraid of giving a game that's so short better scores.

I didn't find this annoying at all...
Maybe 3 NPC's were affected (two of them welding cars, one who is dead on a computer) and textures were only missing on two axes and a few rails on the car scene...

I can live without a fix for that, it's really nothing that destroys the atmosphere or so.

I´ve got a question about the Retail (DVD) Version of the Orange Box for the PC. Thing is, i intented to buy it as i dont have Half Life 2 anyway so it would be a sporty good deal. So, does this Retail Copy still require Steam to be installed and is an Online Connection required even for the Offline Games? If so, will i be restricted the same way as with 2ks pity attempt with Bioshock?

New boy in town, oki, retail include all 5 games, you still need Internet (and steam) for all games including single player, u may install it as many times as ya want.
