£2000?? Did you spell that right? It's a shitload of money for a LCD TV...
37'' is a fair size, you can find really good TV's for fair prices up to 40''
Sony, Toshiba, LG and Sanyo have great TV's, i prefer LG, i saw one of their LCD's for about €1000 (£676) on a store, 37'', 1080p suport, sharp and vivid picture

Hmmm, opinions... i did a tour recently, checking on LCD's (i was thinking of buying one), there was something about Samsung's image i didn't like, i can't quite place it, maybe the picture wasn't sharp enough
What pisses me off the most: there's an outlet store here in town, i missed the oportunity to buy a Sanyo 37' LCD' for €309.... usually they sell crap with flaws, somtimes no packaging, no remotes, a scratch here and there, but that was flawless, it just had been discontinued
They usually replace the oportunities at Wednesdays and Fridays, there's always a queue, and as soon as they open the store, people rush in, running to fetch the best prices

I got myself an Amoi 37" LCD like 2 years ago. 1080p capable and all. Not the best thing around but I gotta say it's not much worse then the new LG's or Samsung.
Costed me a lot back then though.
As for LG or Samsung I like them both, either can't go wrong IMO.
Behold his GLORY! Bow for the technical master!

When it comes to TVs, im a Sony whore. I have a XBR3 and a Grand Wega SXRD.
Check out the 40 inch XBR3, i bought it for my living room. Its an amazing TV, and IMHO well worth the money. All my friends with LCD TVs say they don't even want to watch there TVs after viewing mine. Stay away from Westinghouse at all costs, you get what you pay for, which is crap. The pioneer Elites are also a very good quality TV, there plasmas are amazing.
And remember 1080p "Capable" is not the same as 1080p "Native" . a 1080p capable and not native is still only a 720p TV. But if you a viewing it from over 5 feet away, you will notice little difference between 1080p and 720p with a 40inch set. Any bigger or any closers, 1080p native is a necessity. Also, contrast, response time, and black levels are far more important that native resolution when it comes to picture quality.
You pay a premium for a good Sony or pioneer, but if your a videophile like me, its money well spent. And how often do you buy a TV? Every say 10 years, so don't cheap out. IMHO anyways.
Heres some linkage to the XBR3

well, really for the best quality it can offer, so if I hooked up a PS3 or played a HD movie it will look as crisp as possible.. been looking at a few... tho it's interesting on what other people think as they may of experianced good / bad brands.
Price range im looking for is anything from 0 - £2000... |
Do you plan on hooking a media center PC up to it? If yes, you should really get 1080p. If no, like Bigperm said, there is really no perceptible image difference between 720p and 1080p at this size of screen.
Also, what do you plan on watching on it? Really, HDTV looks good on most LCDs regardless of price. It's really how the tv displays standard resolution content the sets the more expensive ones apart. While there is a lot of HD on cable here, most non-primetime tv is not high definition. The pricier tvs have hardware in them to make the standard definition picture more bearable, and even upconvert the resolution to match the tvs native res.
Also, if you care about what the thing actually looks like, I'd recommend one of the Sharp Aquos line of LCDs, they have 37", 40", and 42" models in both 720p and 1080p, the most expensive being around 2000 USD (also, the more expensive ones might have a DVI input which is rare). I've drooled over them in the store, and they are quite nice looking with a glossy black finish on the case. I plan on buying a 37" Sharp Aquos 1080p in a month or two, it's around $1500 CAD (~1400 USD).

I know almost nothing about TVs and all this out-put input bullshit these days, so forgive my ignorance on the matter, but are these Aquos tvs you just mentioned packing HDMI, or whatever the hell it is?

yeah, most of them even have 2 hdmi inputs. plus, you can also get a dvi-hdmi cable for output from a pc video card. also, most have an ATSC tuner so you can get HD content over the air (ie rabbit ears) without cable. plus, Best Buy usually sells them for cheap. so does Costco, and you get a free extended warranty there in place of the manufacturer's warranty as well

I would say i agree on everything except HDTV looks good on any LCD regardless of price. I am a huge videophile, and ill put a Sony XBR or Pioneer Elite Vs a samsung or a sharp any day. And when you get into HD-DVD, the differences are even more noticeable. I have been very impressed with the aquos line, one of my friends has one, there great. You were right that some of the more expensive TVs show SD much better than cheap TVs, but they also look much better with HD content as well. Oh, and the XBR3 is was prettier TV than the sharp, just look at the floating glass trim, and piano finish black. But then again, Im a Sony TV whore.

I don't disagree with any of that. You do get exactly what you pay for. Premium tvs like Sony/Panasonic are great, and have a ton of features, they just cost more. It all just depends on what you need it for and the price you want to pay. You can get a 37" 720p LCD for $900, which is a great deal for what it is, but it isn't something I would buy. But that is because, like you, I am sometimes obsessed over picture quality and it can drive me nuts when it sucks. About the sharps, at this point in time they happen to be at a good price point (for a mid-high range LCD), and are available almost everywhere. It's a good recommendation because you can be guaranteed not to be disappointed, while at the same time not have to blow too much $$$.
Also consider that pretty much anything is an upgrade over my current setup. man, I can't wait to get a new tv.
I've been looking at TVs for fucking two years now, and the prices keep dropping. It's finally now that the tv I want has reached the right price... something like that aquos 1080p which is only $1500 would have been $4K two years ago, if something comparable even existed. Plus, there finally seems to be enough HD content on cable to warrant the tv to show it

Blacks, response time. Also why do you need 100hz? Movies are 24fps, the new PS3 firmware has a 24hz mode and if your set supports it, you'd get no judder effect and it'd be awesome.
LCD's, for general viewing are surpassed by Plasma's. But for movies they'll do.
Disclaimer: I myself have an LCD PJ.

Depends on your budget. If you can go for a high end LCD, fine. But blacks are still better on budget Plasma's than budget LCD's.

Maybe on new High end Plasmas (Like the new Pioneers), but on old plasmas, not a chance. Plasmas are finally getting good enough to buy, well high end ones anyways.
