Anyone who's ISP is virgin media will start to notice their connection speed even slower than it was before.

They are using Traffic management (Bandwidth capping), Normally I don't have a problem with this because I don't download alot, Thats why I'm on the 4MB package BUT i was shocked to find out about the usage limits.

http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html

4MB Service
Quote:
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: L package download at least 750MB of traffic each.

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 2Mb, with their upload speed set to 192Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

10/20MB Service

Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till midnight) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed – their download speed will be set to 5Mb, with their upload speed set to 256Kb. This will last for 4 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied.

750MB is nothing considering I share the internet with at least 2 other people. I'm going to see if I can get Be ADSL.

they havent even fixed the 10 mbit part yet they jumped straight to 20 mbit because of the sky challenge idioits.

It's a joke, Everythings went downhill since they took over telewest.

1) No more basic sky channels
2) Connection issues, Slow speeds cutting off etc..
3) Bandwidth capping

Ive been thinking of switching for a while - simply due to the price of telewests/virgins BB service..

I'm looking at either Be or Bulldog, But I would need a BT Line installed and I hear that costs like £100 plus to install plus the ISP connection charge. Crying or Very sad

IMHO any ISP using bandwith capping or traffic limits shouldn't even have customers. If I pay for 8mbit I am to have 8mbit all the time (note: if ADSL you'll never have excactly 8mbit ofc) and I should be free to do whatever I feel with my connection. If I want to download 100gb during a day I should be allowed to since I pay for a service to do what I need on the internet. Cheap ISP's using traffic limits and bandwith capping should loose all their customers. I would gladly pay more to get a real ISP if I were in that situation.

Luckily I have 24mbit (ADSL2+, syncing up at about 22mbit) and no traffic limit or anything. I get what I pay for.

A virgin has no experience and likewise Virgin Media have no experience of what a lot of people pay them money for.

Broadband Size: M
During peak times, the top 5% on the Size: M package download at least 350MB of traffic each.

But I dont want to get too excited and start looking for a new ISP. I doubt I'm in their heaviest users list.

They consider anyone who downloads about 350MB a day a heavy user. Rolling Eyes

Squirrely: Now come on y'all. We can't waste time arguing. There could still be survivors out there. We need to hunt them down, and kill them.
Beary: How about we kill them, and then rape their bodies so we can use their blood as lubricant.

Do you actually download stuff at 10240kbyte/s ? (;10 MEGABYTES/PER SECOND)

Thats a 600mb file in 60 seconds. With 20mb that would be 30 seconds..
But I think you refer to megabit.

Ive been with Telewest since BB started here (about 99 i think) and its got steadily worse and worse.. the price is far to much for the poor service they offer. so as soon as i can find an alternative i'll switch.. the only trouble is all BB providers in this country are the same.. all in it for the money with a very limited service Sad Ive heard pipex are ok so might give them a try

Well I disagree, as already said their service has gradually suffered since the merger with Virgin for many reasons, however you just keep telling yourself that they offer the best service in the country you might find the odd idiot who believes you.

Tell me, who offers a better service?

I personally have never had a problem with them. I get a constant high speed. Theres no download limit. I think my service has been down about three times since I've been with them and that's been years.
