It's just the backlight that goes off? If you shine light in the screen you can still see something?

Then either the backlight is broken, or the inverter board/cable.

Easiest thing to check is if the cable is still attached properly.

http://www.eserviceinfo.com/download.php?fileid=10246 for a parts list. Search that site for service manuals as well, exact laptop isn't there, but there might be similar ones.

Is it worth getting it fixed or should I just buy a new laptop under £300?

Yup, sounds like the inverter... I have a 15inch LCD with a dead inverter. Do a search on ebay for a inverter for it. might only cost £20 to fix...

Can it be any inverter? How hard is it to replace?

the new ones are good. Depends what you are after. They got very low rate of deadpixels iv heard. Most laptops does now. But if you are getting a good laptop to play the newest games id might bought something else. You get pretty good cheap laptops with x1600

On my experience DONT get an Acer, Build quality is poor (On this laptop, They might have improved since) And mine has already broke once before under warranty (Power supply problems) and now the backlight's dead without warranty Rolling Eyes
