OK. My old power supply was dying. So I bought a new one, without considering that I would buy a new gfx card to replace my radeon 8500 with a busted fan. So, I bought some budget ass 400W PSU for $19.99. Now, I ended up gettng a geforce 6800, which uses considerably more power than my old card (it has a power plug, old one didn't).
Now, while it seemed stable at first, I'm getting random freezing -- could be during a game, while sitting doing nothing on windows desktop, I've even bumped into the tower with my desk chair and made it freeze a couple times. After I turn off the power and try to turn it on again, it turns off again after like 3-4 seconds. When I try to turn it on again immediately after, it just comes on, but doesn't boot. If I turn it off and wait 15 minutes the thing boots fine. This was actually the same problem I had with my old power supply that I thought was dying...
Now, I have a thermaltake fan + heatsink on my cpu (amd 2000+), and a zalman passive cooler on the northbridge chipset. temps are around 45-50 degrees, and don't ever go much higher even after hours of gaming. 1 stick of RAM, is brand new.
So, are my problems being caused by my POS PSU? I'm only running two HDDs, and just an external dvd burner, along with the 6800. nothing fancy. I can almost live with the problem, but it is a bit annoying, I'd like to fix it.
now, if it is my PSU, can someone recommend something that will work better from here:

I bought FSP Epsilon 700 PSU and I'm happy.
It really is worth the money.

lol...it doesn't run on 700W all the time....only if extra power is needed. It has Active Power Factor Correction.
It's capable of giving out 700W on quald SLI and dual core machines which obviously need that kind of power.

so what makes a power supply shitty? I see some amps and shit on the page, but I'd like to understand why mr $20 PSU is so bad, and what to look for in the future. Also, why the PSU would seem to work most of the time, but has difficulty on start-up.

Don't get me wrong.
I'm not assaulting you or something....I'm talking about my own experiance.
Most of the game crashes and "unoptimized code" which are reported as bugs are actually PSU and power related glitches

nah, TD doesn't seem to have it, Newegg has one of em..
This is the 1K watt which I doubt you'll need lol.

the 510 seems to be a bit hard to find lately and I got mine off ebay about a year ago and it's still running like a champ.
These are of course higher price PSU's but if you have the money to put down on them you won't regret it, they also come with a 5 year warranty. Now there is of course other options for cheaper but me of course, I only buy the highest quality of everything.

That happened to me when my CPU was overheating. When I tried to turn it on again the saftey switch or something got triggered and I had to reconnect my PSU and start it back up for the same thign to happen. This was back when I first built a comptuer and forgot to apply a thermal component lol.
Anywho don't listen to any reviews on TD or Newegg. The people that review them are simply retarded. It's plain and simple, it's a computer world, if you get a defect part fuckin deal with it, your going to get bad parts reguardless of the company unless each motherboard, each CPU, each stick of memory is tested by hand. People on newegg will even give a product a bad review cause UPS banged the shit out of their merchandise and in turn make it look like the product sucks  |

computer is pretty old, so the heatsink + fan has been on there for about 4 years. Maybe the paste is all used up?
although, the temp doesn't appear to be high (checked using Everest)... maybe I should try this first before blowing $$$ on a new PSU?

How about removing the 6800 card and replace it with an older one which consumes less power. If this works you'll know it's either the PSU or the 6800.

well if it is just the paste which costs 5 bucks and below, you'll save that VS buying a more expensive part so ya, I'd try that first. |

and it's ok to use rubbing alcohol to take the old paste off? worked great for the paste I took of the northbridge chipset -- btw, the tiny little bit of paste that comes with a $10 passive cooler ... worth replacing with arctic silver?

arctive silver is usually the best but if it's an old system that your not worried about performance or anything the white gob stuff will suffice. |
