Thought I'd ask some opinions about mixing RAM ...

So I recently upgraded my computer to get a little more life out of it....

AMD Athlon 2000+
ABIT-KD7 motherboard
GeForce 6800 256MB DDR3 AGP (this was the upgrade Wink)
+ new RAM

now, I bought some kingston value ram (stop groaning, I'm cheap Wink) ... a 1 GB stick of PC3200 (400 mhz) CL3 (again, it was cheap and also the max my MB can handle)... I already have 2 x 256 mb PC2100 (266 mhz) sticks o' RAM as well.

Now, since when I mix the two, they run at the speed of the lowest stick.

So ... my question is ... what is better: 1 GB of 400 mhz RAM or 1.5 GB of 266 mhz RAM?

Mostly I'm going to be playing games, so take into account my cpu is probably a bit of a bottleneck.... I could actually give these old RAM to someone as well, which is also why I want to know Smile

Ditch the 256's, besides the fact that they are slower like you said you just increase the likely hood of one going bad by using so many.

My friends PC had 4 sticks of 256! Within a year or so 2 went bad!

I agree that you should ditch the old ram.

But you need to upgrade your CPU sooo much! I don't know what your mainboard can handle, but it's dirt cheap to get a low-end CPU these days. It's really a shame : With 1 gb of memory and your graphics card, you can really get some decent gaming.

My MB is a socket 462 ... so I guess barton core is the best I can do, and it is compatible according to http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=26&pgno=0

ebay comes up with a few ...

this one looks ok I guess ...

Save the cash for a better mobo and a newer cpu. Getting that AXP 3000 will get you almost nothing.

Wait nouse, I don't think it's a good idea to remove 512megs. Games started requiring at least 1 gig ram ( for instance :scda) with 1.5 gigs ram, loading times will be faster and performance will be better than 1gig ram. But do what you like man.

I should probably say, I'm not expecting too much out of this thing.

Basically I just wanted to spend a little so I could try out a few newer games (1 year and older) ... but I really won't be playing games all that much ... I don't really have all that much free time. Also, besides gaming, my intentions were to get a vid card with a DVI output...

SC:DA is probably beyond what my system can handle anyways ...but you know ... maybe Doom3, HL2, FEAR, SC:CT, COD2, BIA ... I haven't been able to play a new game in a couple of years (SC:PT, rainbow six raven shield were the last new games I could run @25-30 fps), so I would still have lots to choose from Smile

Ummm I had 3 dimms now I only installed 2 Dimms in the correct slots for the 400Mhz speed and I get 2 x 200Mhz (400Mhz) when I check Sandra. Is this right or EACH channel should be at 400mhz ?

Thanks
