just go trough the market and item database.. and start counting about how many modules
or items have become useless to a point no one uses em anymore..
for example... defender missiles

Defenders havent been usefull since 2 yrs ago..? Thats one module, which i would roughly guess you could max out the skills needed for in 15 days :F

thats not the point .. the point is even if you max out the skill.. its still a pretty useless
weapon.. since you only can hit 1 missile of each volley... which means is pretty useless
plus like i said thats just 1 example of a module that has degraded... but lets leave it at that.. the post is more about the games that are supposed to come out..

if you wanna talk about the finer points of eve-online with me and why it is screwed up
starts a different post.. or pm me Smile

Is it just me or is this Duke Nukem Forever thing getting tiring ? It's a matter of time till some people start that shit all over again whenever game releases are discussed. NOT useful or cool. I must have read about it a million times

Finally some quality releases!
Scavenger Hunter (c) Sagewood Software
Bass Pro Shops Trophy Bass 2007 (c) Sierra

But seriously... All the new kiddy consoles like 360, Wii etc has really started to thin out the PC releases...

I can't agree, beeing a gamer for over 20 years. I have found a sort of thinning in the PC game production, since a few years back. I'm pretty sure it has to do with consoles and probably MMO's too.
Consoles spreads out the game releases to different platforms.
MMO's lasts a lot longer and engages the gaming companies for much longer.

This article tells some of what I'm talking about, though the guy seems to think it has to do with cycles. I don't think so but I surely hope he is right...

i guess its a matter of taste. ive been gaming about that same time and found there were as many crap games back then as now. I think its just we expect a much higher standard these days that less games appeal for long. but like I said that my own opinion.

im only looking forward to STALKER and Crysis.

I try to see the actual situation in a positive way:

Finally you have enough time to finish all the games you left before finishing to check out newer releases...
Finally you have enough time to try all the games again you left because they were too difficult / frustrating...
Finally you have enough time to patch and play again all the games that were too bugged in their release versions (Gothic3 still anybody playing??)
Finally you can install and play all the games again your hardware was far too weak to play them in earlier times (Oblivion + 1000 plugins ?)
etc.
Very Happy

Im wondering how noone really mentioned Supreme Commander

I mean, since the release of WOW i havent seen such a well polished beta. No to mention, that the game and the action in the game can simply be put into one word: amazing.

That game was more ready to be released in november 2006, than most of the crap you usually get is on its release day. And yet they are still working on it.

Mark the date: February 16th, 2007 in your calendar, as it will be the beginning of a new ERA for RTS gaming.

That much for the preaching. Smile To join the off topic discussion that seemed to hijack the thread here: I also think that MMOGs are the future. I definitely find it a nice trend. In fact in waiting for the less RPG oriented MMOGs to show up as well. There were a few attempt already at - say - massively multiplayer strategy games, but they are still in a rather experimental stage.

Then again, i believe/hope that soon we'll be able to enjoy the MMOness in genres other than RPG. The only categories you really can't do MMOGs with are FPS and SIM games. They require a decent latency for the connection, and good response times, which - because of their nature - MMOG servers are unable to provide - for now.

But in my case, been there, done that.
And I'm not even gaming as much as I used too =)

But back to the topic

Another reason for the PC games lessening in releases that I've heard about could also be that game producers say it costs more $ to create games today.

And this is an opinion right? Not based on any facts? If so, please link me up.

I mean, planetscape http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/overview/gameID/71
has been around a LONG time, it worked OK latency wise and technology has advanced a lot since then.

And then we have this:
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/overview/gameID/34
Seems to be working all right.

And this, being developed still:
http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/overview/gameID/186
At least PROMISED to be a great game.

My point is, FPS/SIM MMO's are possible today. The technology or connection speeds allow it , and in my opinion the main reason we see so few FPS MMO's is that it simply is a new thing and new stuff is always scary for the game producers, they rather make 109804911 copies of WOW and earn their 9290050239598 $$$.

I do agree with you 100% that MMO's are the future though =)

Never said it was a fact.. maybe i have not stressed it enough, but yeah that was my opinion based on my knowledge about the state of the industry.

Latency is a big problem for most of the MMOGs however, and don't tell me it isnt. Sure when there are only 2-3 players around, then its all fine and dandy. When you get 20-30, then you already can feel the LAG sometimes, and when you hit truly MMOG scale with 200-300 players interacting at the same time, its gets unplayable.

If you can show me any MMOG - don't even have to make it FPS or SIM - where 300 players can play - say fight - next to eachother against the same enemy (in the same zone) or against eachother, then i'll agree that the industry is truly at the point where epic gameplay of this scale is possible.

As epic is -IMO- what MMOGs are for. If i want to have 1 on 1 deathmatches, i don't need an MMOG for that. If i want to re-play the WW2, i would need servers that can handle 1000s of players fighting at the same time, in the same zone. And that with decent latency and responsiveness.

Mate, I just GAVE you an example of that! =D

http://www.mmorpg.com/gamelist.cfm/setView/overview/gameID/34

And there is only ONE server!!!

That being, that ppl, even here, from Scandinavia, has pings of like 150-200, and they aren't complaining about lag/latency.

Yeah, that COULD be a really interesting game considering real time close combat. However... I read something awful...

2.1 What is the Real Combat System?
When fighting with a sword, an axe or other melee weapons in Age of Conan, you actually have to direct your weapons in certain directions yourself, in real-time. Whereas in other games of the genre you usually just have to target something and then click a “fight” button, in Age of Conan you have to perform the strikes yourself in one of six different directions. This makes battles much more interesting in terms of action, and you have a far greater control on how your character fights. With the unique targeting system you can also hit multiple enemies at once, so if happen to slash your sword through two enemies standing next to each other, both of these will suffer damage. It is all, in one word, real.

As you can see for yourself, here.

This sounds very much like the "aim in the general direction of your enemy". Which I personally hate in games. It's just another way of making true eye to hand coordination skill and reflexes not count.

Die by the sword and Jedi Academy are the games that IMO has been closest when it comes to eye to hand coordination skill and reflexes.

THE problem with Planetside is that most fighting takes place on bases where it mostly becomes the same thing over and over again. But when you get to finaly do some fighting on land the game truly excels.

Although I believe the game would be better with longer respawn times too...
