I own a X850XT and I've been unable to play any games for two weeks. Every time I start a game, the GPU temperature goes up until it reaches ~120°c and Windows pulls the plug and shuts down.
It didn't bother me at first, since I didn't have time to play any games in the past two weeks anyway, but now Sam ad Max Episode 2 is here and the same thing happens even on a game witch such mediocre graphics.
The temperature during gaming was usually high (about 90-100°c) because my PC is in a bad vented place.
Any ideas?

have you even checked the card ? its probably full of dust blocking the fan of doing its job.

Yes, I even turned it to 100% via Ati Tray Tools, but the GPU still overheats

Well, the only option is to get a professional VGA fan to cool it down. I'd recommend a Zalman one.

could take off the heatsink and reapply some new thermal compound to it, try some arctic silver.

So right, had a 850xt my self, got a zalman and never had a probelm agin and it is close to noiceles.

All right. These Zalman fans are available near me:
VF700-AlCu 22,89 €
VF900-Cu 30,89 €
Fatal1ty FS-V7 34,99 €
Fatal1ty FC-ZV9 39,90€
The VF900-Cu and FS-V7 are in stock, so I could get them right today, the others have to be ordered.
Which would you recommend?
Do I need some special tools or anything else to swap the fan?

If I was you I would go for the VF-900CU, and I don't think any special tools are needed.

That goddamn card should work without any extra cooling (or cost!). Must be faulty, 120 Celsius is HELL ! You are lucky nothing is fried yet.
If the warranty is valid take it back to be replaced. Extra cooling solutions should be necessary ONLY for overclocking, high-end gfx cards are expensive enough as it is ...
EDIT: This should be in hardware of course

Have you "VISSUALY!" confirmed that the fan is spinning, by actually opening the case and peeping in at the cragard. 120 Frigging C thats a bust fan if U ask me.

But normally a card should not just start to overheat like that, except for a fan failure. Have you checked if the heat sink is really sitting on the card as it should. Another scenario could be that ANOTHER fan in ur case is failing and thereby creating excess heat. The 1st thing i would do is open the case ans just confirm that all that should move is moving and all that should not isn't  That's pretty basic damage control, no?
Another question, have you installed a new driver or tried a different driver with the same "hot" result. Just asking as I know that there was a driver from NV that had a similar prob, not so serious as this but never the less.
And maybe a MOD would be kind enough to move this thread to Hardware!

You should try to temporarily install the card to another PC, just to check if the temperature is also high there. You never know ... it could also be PSU related.

The Zalman is cool but considering your already horrible case airflow I would opt to get the arctic cooling silencer for that series of cards. They blow the air out the back and are actually cheaper then the VF900.

No it is teh fan on his 850xt, I had it souds like hell and it dosent work, I coud nerly not play eny games with it.
