AnimalMother: Impressive. Usually they charge you an arm and a leg for proprietary things like that. Bastards!
As for DVDs: There are rumors that they will offer DVD playback in the future using a firmware update. The Wii isn't meant to be a mediacenter or DVD player though... it's a box for gaming.

Well you can expect to pay about £10 for it. But if you have multiple controllers which are in regular use then it's best to get a charger for the battery packs which costs £15 I think. Similar to what you would do with rechargable batteries for the Wii.

i would say yes, everyone said that the DS would fail with a touchscreen and how the graphics and the like would'nt be able to compete against the PSP, but look at it now and the DS has outsold the PSP 2:1 and has far greater games and playablity, thus to me the wii is a extension to what they achieved with the DS and i see great things happening. Its not always about graphics but rather gameplay and more importantly fun, to me this is where things have seemed to be missing with the newer next-gen consoles although i own 2x360's, to me the Wii is just as important and has been more fun than anything the 360 has offered so far

Another important thing the Wii could do is draw more people into the gaming scene. More people in gaming = more interest in developing games = perhaps more innovative and fun games.
As for the graphics being "shitty".... As a long time computer gamer (anyone but a computer gamer who complains about the graphics is either a hypocrite or a fucking retard) I find them refreshing. The artistic work is great, and the graphics are good enough to let you get sucked into the game without distracting you. I suppose this is more of a subjective point but... meh. You can only take being a graphics whore so far.

Wii-games have great gameplay value, and i'll take great gameplay in front of great graphics anyday! We all remember Unreal 2.......
Btw..what's the point of playing a game with great graphics if the game sucks?

Kilko: I think the main argument many people use is that great gameplay and great graphics are not mutually exclusive. You could have a game with great gameplay *and* great graphics.
Personally, I think this is more subjective. To me, the graphics in Zelda are far more immersive than many of the games with uber-realistic graphics that need the newest graphics card on a PC... Why? Because EVERY game based on "realistic" graphics will *always* have multiple things which you simply cannot render realistically, and each of these things sticks out and drives me fucking crazy. Personally, I find cartoon or non-realistic graphics just as immersive (if not more) as "realistic" games.
I also like to ask these people which games have both excellent gameplay and graphics. I could count on my hand the number that *might* be worthwhile to me.
Anyhow.
In a perfect world, we could get each system we enjoy games from and have access to all the best titles. Too bad I'm too poor for this!

wii isnt supposed to be a topnotch gfx console. rather its ambition is to revive older nintendo game library using a new controller. of course gfx wise it wont be as immersive as x360 or ps3, but the controller is supposed to immerse you physically with this detector sensored controller.
gameplay for nintendo games was really top, but with controller it'll become "visceral".
the only question is will it be able to pump out good new games as fast as others, or will it be a retro-console that plays the old good games of nintendo.

And it really shows what you can do with a controller like this. The future is bright for the wii, thats for sure. The possibilities are endless.
I'm one of those players that really gets into the game. I'm a retired tennis player so tennis is easily my favorite. I use the exact same stances, strokes etc as in real-life and it works brilliant. The only thing I'm missing is the possibility to run on your own, but I'm sure that will be possible in a future more real tennis game with the help of the nunchuck.
All the rest of the wii sports games are also awesome. Baseball is hard though, or maybe I just suck.
I want more sport games in the future. I would love a track & field game!
Wii for the win! |
You should be interested in the fact that Top spin 2 was all but officially confirmed to be in dev for the Wii by take2. Actually they said all their sports-and many non-sports franchises were being overhauled with wii controls. I think it wont be a question of what tennis game will come to the wii, but which will be the best. The new Virtua tennis looks great and the ppl making it would have to be fools not to come out with a wii version.
Besides that, SSX Blur looks to be IMHO the Best SSX game to date, even just judging from screenies, movies, interviews. The devs who worked on the previous ssx games say they dont even compare to playing ssx with the wii-mote. The uber tricks are actually drawing shapes in the air, not mad random button-mashing like before. It is coming in March and I won't even hesitate to buy.
So yeah, I'd say the future is pretty bright for the Wii myself. Tho it could use a few more epic and deep games like Zelda, I think they will come in time, once the exploration phase(by developers) of what is possible and what works with the new control scheme is over.

I love my DS but summing up the machine, I'd say it has succeeded despite the touch screen not because of it.
Anybody that claims the control system for games like Metroid, while undoubtedly ingenious, is fun and accessible is a fucking liar lol.

As much as I dont wish to believe that, I think you are right. If the game uses the same fps controls as Red Steel and Call of Duty 3, the new Metroid Prime is going to be a big disappointment simply because of that.

The post was a bit tongue in cheek, but it does seem like a lot of the games get high scores because they are being clever, irrespective of wether they are piss poor to play. In the end the games that won the war IMHO were Advance Wars and Mario etc, which were pretty much the same as the GBA versions.
My two cents for what it's worth.
Can't comment on the WII because I don't own one but I'm certainly glad Nintendo are thinking outside the box.

Dude, have you ever played the brain training games? Or starfox command? Or trauma center? Or kirby games? If so you will know that the touch screen works Very well in certain applications. Actually I can't see those brain training games(for example) being in the top selling spots they are in without it. And I personally am looking forward to the upcoming strategy games and tycoon games that would be hell to play on a portable without the touch interface.
Anyways yeah maybe metroid and fps games will never work well with a touch screen but its pretty insane saying the interface had nothing to do with the system's popularity. Or that anyone who has fun playing those games is a liar. I mean what is the PSP but a ds with no touch? And a analogue stick that hurts after awhile. And that system sucks.
Edit..forgot to even mention the multi-million selling nintendogs. Maybe THE reason the ds suceeded. No matter how matter how crappy and stupid the game is, the public loves something you can interact with besides just pushing buttons. Which in regards to the wii is why you see it being played on the today show and conan obrian, ect and not the ps3.

Starfox was one of the games I had in mind when I was writing my post. It's all just opinions, and mine isn't even proveable but I think the obligation to take advantage of the novelty features has denied us some absolute classics. Again there's no way of proving it but the machine is as powerful as an N64, just imagine if they had made a traditional sequal to Starfox 64. It wouldn't have just been clever, it would have been great.
The real question isn't wether you enjoy the games now, it's wether you can be arsed to play them in 5 years. I doubt it very much.
