Dear mods and admins of NFOrce,

I like to bring this under your attention. Tonight a discussion started because somebody posted a remark in a tread that had nothing to do with the original post. This remark however showed how this person behaves in the section "World News". This resulted in some criticism towards this person.

At some point i posted a remark and then 30 seconds later all off-topic posts were deleted. I will abide by what you decide but i rather see a person temp banned for misbehavior then erasing a chain of posts. Quite often a starting post results in a multi-threaded chain of posts that has nothing to do with the original post. It is a waste just to erase it.

Best regards,

Well although it wasn't me that deleted the posts in the thread. I can understand the reasoning behind the mods decision in deleting the offending posts.

When off topic posts are not deleted, the thread goes all over the place. So when the board is unattended for a short while say like when the mods are in bed or at work, we have a great old time going through a thread seeing what is relevant and what isn't. This can take a great deal of time and is certainly frustrating.

Ok a final burp of me. Is it so important that a thread stays on-topic? I think the function of some parts of this board is to generate discussion. Is it so bad that some topics lead to other topics to be discussed?

Not at all. I suppose it depends on the seriousness of the main topic.

Take an example.

Just say the topic is about the Soham murders and it declines into something like quake two. Then I would certainly delete the off topic posts.

However if the main topic wasn't as serious as that, say your favourite sandwich, then it went onto pickles. I would probably just let it continue on the way it is.

Jenni is spot on with this one..

this is a topic based discussion board/forum.
not an irc-channel... we have such at Eris-Free Network.. #nforce .. Smile

when posts go off-topic - they should (always) be pruned/deleted/moved...
as Jenni said - topics can often lead to new discussions.. but if so - create a new thread and throw a quicklink to it in the old topic..

its frustrating to read through 9 pages of useless info on eg. xx game or yy movie...
