Well if you have no other choice but to stick with your AGP platform here are a few reviews of a 7600GS.

The most important one is the review that pits the 7600GS against the 6600GT which is yours 9800Pro's closest competitor. As you can see from the review it doesn't necessarily mop the floor with the 6600GT but its a solid improvement.
The 7600GS comes in a 512MB flavor too but I suggest you avoid that since there is no real world performance gain from the added memory. The 256 versions seem to be priced between $110-150.
Now here are your other options. Shell out more for a 7600GT? Buy a 7800GS? Or wait a bit for the X1950Pro AGP.
The AGP 7600GT is out of the question because where its priced at you might as well get a 7800GS. The X1950Pro is an awsome card and the AGP version has not been neutered like the 7800GS, but im assuming the price will be really high.
So I suggest you grab that 7600GS mainly because at 1024x768 you won't be needing a monster card and its a cheap upgrade. But its all dependent on what your willing to spend and if you desire a more powerful card.

I have one of those 7600gs256mb's and its pretty good. Its the XFX model with passive cooling (no fan), which is nice 'cause its silent and I dont have to worry about dust in the fan. I think the performance is okay, at 1280x1024.

I upgraded from a 128mb 9800pro to a 7600gt. You made a good choice in my opinion. The 7600gt is a lot better than the 9800pro. I have yet to play a single game that the 7600gt cant handle.
The 9800pro is really good at handling 3d textures, but when you start adding lots of shaders it begins to struggle. It was a great card. I was sad to wave goodbye to mine.
