Next computer system is a virtual human... Do you believe that is possible?
If they put all those together:
Article Intelligence
Voice Recognition
3D Engine
Text To Speech Engine
With all choices that you have, meaning if you install some others like other character and other TTS voices that could use and other model 3D character that you can use with option that offers Voice Recognition to also use PC Dictation. And mixed up with some services will be great. to make something "human computer interface".
Like you can speak to human and order it not just a computer ..
also can remind you of dates and do as same as human and can use it as you like..and make it as you like bad good evil .. as you decide.
I believe that something done like that with Microsoft agent but it's so great at the moment.
If you have seen software that try this please, refer to it and post it.
About me I have found try to make software like this:
Hal Assistance or virtual Hal.
Virtual Hypnotist
E-speaking :
This software allows you to have a more intuitive interface and more natural interaction with your computer. The software includes an Avatar for a more realistic interaction with the computer.
and here is a video i don't think it worth it but a try of it :
and about movies you could see it on Simone movie.
You may wakeup Tomorrow and find that computer has record your dream .. you don't know that there is dream recording machine .. so , it may implant the new technology with computer all time .
Yes, It should be like this way you said it
"speech programs which actually learn by having a conversation with humans"
and if we think we think that we know everything, we now started ignorance.
i don't think that any one that know that there is a machine that could record your dream and see it (video) .
and about mobile technology , it's fascinating .
Now i use say the name of who i want call and the mobile Recognition the voice and know who is the one that i want call and call it .
What else we could have ..
A Real Human robot , yes about the body if you really need to make real human you could use real doll.
As part of my degree I build and program AI driven robots and completely AI driven robotics is a long way off.. Sure you can program a robot to react to situations and provide reasonable solutions to situations it has not yet encountered (and thus learn).. but those reactions have no control, they could be massively random and until we have the ability to store/process more information the robots just wont be able to cope with the thousands of situations that occur every second. Along side that the sensing systems required to create a human like robot is again way off..
Its possible to create something that mimics a section of human existence.. but to mimic it all at one time, you need far better technology.
While sensory and motor functional components are improving all the time, the real hurdle to human-like robots is the AI. The way humans absorb, store and use information is still a long way off from being mimicked by any software. There are some very intuitive speech programs which actually learn by having a conversation with humans but I think the programmers have to find ways for the AI to be able to better link that information.
Re: [sYn] , i would like to see it.

*edit* Built = Build
Sounds a bit like my university work for my diploma thesis. Still you used subsymbolic AI (ANNs, and stuff like that). Were doing quite the same but with means of classic AI reasoning.
Still our robotic platform still lacks in some respects. We're using heavily modified Lego Mindstorms, well only the bricks are left of the original hardware - still one can build very different Robots with that kit.
@ManBlooD
I think syn is right. AI is a promising technology but it still lacks decades (thinking optimistically here) of work until a system you describe is possible.
We use the RCX in the first year and move onto MIT's Handy Board from then on.. its a good bit of kit, but only as good as the coder behind it.. the number of robots driving into walls is .. well.. above 99% (Ah.. good to be the 1%..).
I have another robotics module this year, I'll be building something a little less conventional this time, I'll make sure to show it off when its done.. I decided against using robotics for my dissertation project as I didn't have enough equipment to complete what I wanted to do.. !
Oh and I usually use Fuzzy Logic for my robot control, seems to work the best based on the limited processing power.. (and time..)
You have no idea how complex the human sensory system is, and that's only the first thing you would need to emulate to a certain degree for this to happen.
I think "real" robots are not that far into the future. But I don't think they will be composed of traditional "hardware" but more of biological components which would be required to make real AI IMO. I think one of the bigger issues would be the moral aspects.
Now really...
To make a virtual copy of the human mind is, as stated before, far into the future.
Nobody havn't even made a AI sufficiently advanced to be believed to be a human in a chat program, for example msn.
Add to that all the other aspects that the human mind can cope with...
