|
 |
Alright guys, here we go.
I had an external 300 GB Maxtor USB drive. The USB part got fucked up somehow (I don't know, I didn't do it, came home and it was like that).
Anyways, I pulled it apart and attempted to repair the USB socket but after several hours of what looked like a clean repair, it just doesn't want to work.
So I pulled it apart some more and eventually pulled out just a normal IDE drive.
Now I plugged it in, Windows picks it up but wants to format it before I can use it... any way around losing my 200 GB of data? :\

Its probably formated in some wierd file system, I would suggest checking the website/technical documentation for information on the file system.

Get a new external HDD case. Then use DD to copy down all the data to an img or something.
[21:38] <chiz***> how do you "had" aids
[21:38] <Voyevoda> when you get it down to 1 aid

Well eventually I'll get a new external case, but I really want to get at my shit.
So I tried that GetBackData NTFS thing, and it seemed like it was picking up my files, it errored a few times though.. the scan was gonna take like 8 hours so I stopped it for now.
I booted up the computer under Ubuntu with a Live cd and can see the harddrive there. Gparted reports it's a NTFS drive... can I convert the drive without losing data? Or do something else useful?
EDIT: Ok I was able to mount the drive in Ubuntu and browse it properly... any way to get it to work this way in Windows by doing something to it while in Ubuntu?

no you don't , have done it several times and didn't even lose 1 byte. Try partition magic 8.

You shouldnt lose the data but that wont solve the problem. Its not going to rebuild the TOC on conversion, you need to fix the error on the drive, simple as that. You may find even a scan disk will do it?

I don't think it's an error though, I'm just not accessing it through the USB option anymore, who knows what the hell those Maxtor OneTouch freaks do to their harddrives...
But yah, I could access the data through linux, still sucks though..
Anyways, thanks for all who helped and took a look at the thread.

Should just buy your own hard-drive and your own enclosure. Then you can easily take it out the enclosure and all the data is fine.

I doubt that Maxtor uses another file format, otherwise linux wouldn't find an NTFS partition. We have some usb/pata adapter at work with wich you can connect drives to usb ports.
I would plug the drive in your pc and let Easy Recovery recover the data, that should still be possible, and you don't need linux for it, but it could take some time.

Well maybe the usb controller from the hd is not the only thing wich was dying. Did you check with that Maxtor tool if the hd is fine?

I have found paragon partition manager to be excellent at recovering data from drives that windows cannot see / read / wants to format.

Had a similar reading problem with an internal HD.
You've probably sorted it by now but I found the only way to get my data was to use a recovery tool and transfer it to a working partition. Forget about your settings and program files m8. Wasted too much time trying to recover it fully and keep its structure.
